What does Bryonia have to do with breast pain?

[Anyone can get breast pain, even boys!]

What would a homoeopathic first-aid kit be without Bryonia alba? Pretty incomplete, I would say! Perhaps I have been skirting around the subject a little in recent weeks, but there are so many interesting homoeopathic remedies and I can’t write about every climbing bindweed – as Bryonia is also called – every week.

If you’ve been following me for a while, you surely already have Bryonia in your medicine cabinet, because you know the effectiveness of Aconitum napellus 200 in combination with Bryonia alba 30 (according to the Banerji protocol). The two are taken at the first sign of a respiratory illness. More information on dosing and potency of the remedies can be found here.

Perhaps you recall that I wrote about this Banerji protocol in my blog post A whole alphabet soup of viruses. You could also read a post in March 2020 on flu and Co. (The specific date is a clue to the underlying topic... if you know what I mean.)

There was already a post from me in 2017 about the general use of Bryonia for back and joint pain, followed shortly afterwards by an article about the remedy’s importance in breast pain.

Bryonia for breast pain

Recently I received this interesting question: “Do you know a homoeopathic remedy for my adolescent son who has swollen, tender breasts?”

If you know anything about homoeopathy, then you know one thing: In Practical Homoeopathy® Bryonia offers a disease-specific protocol for pain and tension in breast tissue. When adolescents like this boy go through puberty, their hormones change. They may not be able to properly assess the breast pain and wonder, “What the hell is wrong with me?”

Had this young man undergone a classical homoeopathic case-taking, the appropriate remedy for him might have been overlooked… As you know, the Practical Homoeopath™ always prescribes according to the presenting complaints, as they present. For this reason we would normally turn to a specific protocol for the complaints that has been shown to work for breast pain or breast tension: Bryonia alba 30, twice daily, until a clear improvement occurs.

Boys can have breast pain too

In case you are sceptical, I want to repeat: Yes, in this particular question it was about breast pain in an adolescent boy! This is an important issue that I may not have emphasised enough until now.

Dear readers – breast pain is breast pain, whether it’s a woman with PMS, a pubescent girl, a mother after childbirth, an adolescent boy or even a newborn.

In fact, newborns of both sexes can also suffer from breast pain “because of maternal hormones in the womb”[1]. That is entirely natural, and so is our usual homoeopathic prescription for this condition. We would always consider Bryonia alba 30, regardless of the patient’s age or sex.

Let me make one thing clear. As with any illness, we use homoeopathy here exclusively for pathological changes. Homoeopathic medicines are exactly that... medicines! We do not take them casually like dietary supplements are sometimes taken.

So if the breasts are only slightly tender but not excessively painful, that is not a pathology. In that case stay calm and carry on with your daily life. If, however, the breasts are causing significant discomfort, then Bryonia is worth considering. If you don’t yet have it at home, you should make space for this important remedy now.

Isn’t homoeopathy simply exquisite?

Homoeopathy offers, regardless of age, gender or even species, a health paradigm on equal terms that provides people with peace of mind and health autonomy! And that is certainly good news you can happily share!

Homoeopathy helps – pass it on!

Warm regards,

Yours
