Uranium and iodine: a wise old child

News

E. is a nine-year-old girl who suffers from congenital malformations affecting her whole body. She is tiny, barely as big as a four-year-old, and almost all her bones are deformed: extremely severe scoliosis, clubfoot and a compressed chest that has pushed her heart to the right side and leaves hardly any room for the lungs. Her forehead is large and misshapen, with a network of visible veins just under the skin, and her genitals are not properly formed.

She has received specialised treatments all her life, and her parents have sought advice and help worldwide. Her immune system is very weak. Every cold brings high fever and coughing. Because she is unable to expectorate the mucus, she receives even more antibiotics and often has to be hospitalised for prolonged periods because of pneumonia. During her short life she has already been in hospital about 20 times and she needs antibiotics at least six times a year, as well as oxygen. Her parents have fought for her life all these years; they have kept her away from school and shopping centres and have avoided guests who might bring a cold or the flu.

When I first saw E. I was surprised, not because of her malformations, for which I had been prepared, but because of the image that came to my mind on seeing her: the hellish fires of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Another notable feature was a distinct smell of yeast.
E. has the appearance of a wise, old person in a tiny body. Her parents confirmed that in many ways she is ahead of her years. She learned to read and write early and was able to draw in three dimensions from the start. Her remarks are often of a maturity far beyond her years. Despite her limitations she is not impressed by her condition.
She is known to be her mother's “leader” when there is stress, as if she is able to see through the situation and find a solution.

For example, E.'s mother scolded the dog because it had come into the house with muddy paws and had soiled the carpet. E. defended the dog and said the dog was not to blame, that's simply how dogs are. When she saw her mother upset about it, E. apologised, comforted her mother and explained how best to deal with such a dog so that no one would need to be annoyed with him!

It turned out that E. had only one great fear: fear of fire. She could not tolerate open flames in the house, including the gas hob, and reacted in panic when a candle was lit. Fire engine sirens and reports about fires upset her. She is very concerned for the welfare of others and can become very upset when she hears of cruelties, especially against animals. The only behavioural problem she shows is that she becomes angry when she is not allowed to play with her friends as soon as one of them has a cold.

Because of her severe malformations and her “wise old woman” appearance I decided to prescribe an actinide: Uranium C 200. Over the following two days she was unusually sad, cried and clung to her parents. A few weeks later she began to cough again, but this time she was able to expectorate the mucus. She developed a high fever and was very hungry and restless.

The symptoms looked like iodine (hot, hungry and restless), and I would have liked to prescribe Uranium jodatum, but that is not yet available, so I gave her Uran C 200 together with Jodum C 200.
It was E. herself who showed us the right way: “I will need this a few times and then I will be well!” She reassured her mother, who otherwise would have called the doctor, which would have meant the usual recourse to antibiotics and a possible hospital stay. For the first time fever and cough subsided and E. recovered without other medicines. Since then she has occasionally had colds, which subside immediately after a dose of Uranium. For the first time in nine years E.'s mother felt secure enough to allow herself a week's holiday.

Ten months later E.'s health had improved so much that her mother had begun to take care of her own health as well, “because I no longer have to worry about E.” Again E. takes the lead here: “Oh mum, you worry far too much. You must learn to trust!”
Interestingly, with the improvement in her general condition E.'s fear of fire also disappeared. She now likes to light a candle before dinner, blow it out and light it again. She still startles when she hears fire engine sirens and says how terrible it must be for the poor people whose house is burning, but she no longer panics. In the meantime E. is no longer the family's problem child. She can withstand colds and coughs and recovers quickly. Her immune system seems to be the healthiest in the family!
