The Secret Life of a Baby with Three-Month Colic

It's not that they don't want to tell you anything; they simply can't yet. For that reason, babies necessarily have to keep to themselves whatever is bothering them.

When babies are clearly in distress but cannot say what's upsetting them, this can be a major challenge for new mothers. They have to learn to read the new situation.

Which isn't that hard if you know what to look for.

If we are attentive and look closely, we can very quickly interpret the signs:

A baby that draws its legs up to its chest and kicks lets us know that it probably has a lot of trapped wind that needs to come out.

Babies who like being carried in the 'airplane' hold – you know: the baby lies over the adult's arm like a lion on a branch, all limbs hanging down – are communicating that pressure eases their pain.

A baby that cannot be soothed at all and keeps sliding further over the shoulder when being carried to increase pressure on the stomach is trying to tell us that the colic is severe.

Decoding these secret 'messages' has a great advantage, because new mothers develop a highly sensitive and very intelligent observational ability.

Once you've deciphered your baby's secret messages, you can better attend to the older children and the whole family again.

To be honest, sometimes asking the adults how they're getting on with their baby doesn't help. It's better to ask questions and quietly study the behaviour to gain a good overall impression.

To outsiders this may look like intuitive action, but in fact it is a scientific approach that is practised seamlessly in homoeopathy.Book suggestion relevant to the topic

· Observe … choice of remedy

· Observe … choice of remedy

· Observe – choice of remedy

Empirically this method has proven itself and refutes the criticism so often levelled at homoeopathy by modern medicine. The accusation is that homoeopathy's effects are merely anecdotal (although life, of course, is exactly that – one anecdote after another!).

Be that as it may – you can be proud of your mum-science. You carry out many small mini-studies, namely within your family.

After following your senses and exploring your baby's secret world, you develop a feel for how the people in your family are doing, even when it may not be expressed. And let's be honest – it's not only babies who keep secrets; the same happens in adolescence! So it's worth nurturing this ability as early as possible.

If you have observed your baby and find that it has colic, then Colocynthis C200 is the right remedy. The key symptom for these stomach pains is improvement from (or desire for) pressure.

Colocynthis fits the symptoms of colic perfectly. I give it very successfully twice daily until the symptoms have improved. If the symptoms recur, it can be given again.

For colic I often give Nux vomica C30 in addition to Colocynthis, especially if the baby is very restless at night or if the birth was accompanied by medication.

Nux vom. is not always indicated; usually Colocynthis is entirely sufficient.

Please remember: even if you cannot speak directly with your baby, you can tune in to what is happening inside them. Your family is your laboratory. My children used to jokingly call themselves my 'guinea pigs'.
