Are you wondering what the Schuessler salts have to do with Goliath and David? A great deal, and here I would like to tell you the story of my father and Natrium phosphoricum.
My father always had tonnes of Tums (chewable tablets for heartburn, available over the counter in the USA; translator's note) in his car. I have no idea where the XXL packs came from, which he usually bought on special offer and constantly, really constantly, chewed. They only brought him relief for a short time, then the pain returned.
At that time homeopathy was still fairly new to me too, and in my enthusiasm I told my father about Nat phos: “Hey Dad, why don’t you take Nat phos D6 instead of your Tums?”
Now picture this: my tiny pack of Nat phos up against XXL Tums! It very much resembles David versus Goliath — I assume you know the story? My battle with the XXL giant was no different.
Surprisingly, my father very quickly fell in love with his small, smart and elegant Schuessler salt, because it fitted so well into his shirt pocket. You couldn’t say the same about the Tums. What he appreciated most, however, was that he no longer had to swallow huge amounts of chewable tablets.
At first he still had to take Nat phos several times a day: before every meal and before going to bed. But it didn’t take long and he was taking Nat phos only once a day before lunch.
Then he was able to taper off the Schuessler salt by taking it every other day and eventually not at all. Only now and then did he need to resort to the remedy, usually when he couldn’t resist a particularly fatty meal.
David — the tiny Nat phos — had definitely taken on the Goliath Tums!
I was therefore greatly surprised when, years later, I caught my father chewing a whole handful of Tums.
The heartburn was back and, although my father is accomplished in many ways — clever, charming, musically gifted and a successful businessman — he had completely forgotten the success he’d had with Nat phos. (Then again, it may simply have been the huge Tums supplies still stored somewhere in the house that he probably wanted to use up.)
I said to him: “Dad, what are you doing? Why don’t you take your Nat phos?”
“You’re right, I had completely forgotten!” was his reply, and he slipped a smart little glass tube back into the breast pocket of his shirt. This time it took only two weeks and the heartburn was gone. That’s how wonderfully homeopathy works!
Natrium phosphoricum is a wonderful remedy for any form of acidosis, not just heartburn — gout also responds well to the remedy. It can also help with overweight, especially when acidosis is present with soft, greenish and sour-smelling stools.
Like all other homeopathic remedies, Nat phos appears unassuming, but it packs a punch. To your health!
