Cell salts as the building blocks of life

It is human nature to want to assign what exists in quantity to certain groups or categories. I can well understand that.

It is the same in homeopathy. We homeopaths also divide our remedies into different groups, such as animal remedies, plant remedies, poisonous medicinal plants, nosodes, cell salts and so on.

That's a good thing, because estimates suggest there are over 6,000 different homeopathic remedies worldwide.

Let us take a closer look at the cell salts here.

Cell salts are composed of mineral substances that also make up human tissue, such as bone, skin, etc. There are exactly 12 of these cell salts:

  • Calcium fluoratum (Calc flour)
  • Calcium phosphoricum (Calc phos)
  • Calcium sulphuricum (Calc sulph)
  • Ferrum phosphoricum (Ferrum phos)
  • Potassium chloratum (Kali mur)
  • Potassium phosphoricum (Kali phos)
  • Potassium sulphuricum (Kali sulph)
  • Magnesium phosphoricum (Mag phos)
  • Sodium chloratum (Nat mur)
  • Sodium phosphoricum (Nat phos)
  • Sodium sulphuricum (Nat sulph)
  • Silicea (Sil)

The cell salts are given in low potencies (D3, D6 or D12), but they can (and are) also prescribed in higher potencies.

Sometimes they are also referred to as dietary supplements and, in a way, they are.

In fact I used them myself when my children were in their growth phase and I wanted to support them as naturally as possible. I wanted my children to grow up sturdy and healthy. The cell salts were for me not only medicine but also a natural supplement.

One could say I gave them 'just in case', in the sixth potency, D6.

Over the years I gained experience and knowledge and nowadays I no longer consider the cell salts as dietary supplements but as medicines.

Today I use them specifically for certain symptom pictures and conditions. With a clear indication I give them in the third potency, i.e. as D3. In the USA D6 is easier to find than D3 and it can also be used with good results.

What do I mean by a specific indication?

Let us stay with the growth phases of children mentioned above. During the growth phase the following complaints can occur:

  • growing pains
  • delayed teething
  • mineralisation disorders of the teeth — the teeth fail to harden
  • hair grows too sparsely and is too thin
  • loss of appetite
  • anxieties
  • susceptibility to colds
  • frequent headaches
  • generally not very robust
  • sleep problems

Each of these complaints calls for Calc phos D3, taken three times daily until the complaints improve. This can take a few days or several months, depending on the severity of the symptoms, the child's age and general health.

(Before I forget: Calc phos D3 can also help adults who suffer from sleep problems. It is definitely worth having this Schuessler salt in the home medicine cabinet.)

This is my use of Calc phos and does not exclude that other mothers may use this cell salt differently than I do. You should certainly use it as long as the indications for it are present.

I would recommend every mother give it to her children cautiously and with common sense, i.e. only when genuine growth complaints are present.

To be clear: do not give it as a prophylactic while your child is healthy and strong.

Why?

Because homeopathic remedies are also medicines and therefore should not be taken 'just like that'. This is also the reason for taking vitamin D, C and others. I do not believe that the daily intake of these supplements is justified in every case.

Returning to the question of potency: sometimes I also give, for example, Calc flour as D12, because many of the great homeopaths have found that this dilution is best absorbed by the body.

From the group of cell salts there are a manageable twelve remedies that are absolutely recommended as an introduction to the materia medica.
