Case study 1: Staphisagria heals transgenerational patterns

December 2014: Y., the autistic son of patient M., is ten years old. He was diagnosed with autism, hyperactivity, attention deficits and speech developmental delays. He is hyperactive and showed no interest in his surroundings until the age of five. He responded to music, but not to words.
He could not defend himself and was eventually bullied. Yet Y. also showed destructive behaviour with sudden temper tantrums; he could never wait his turn. He hit his classmates, but soon regretted it. Because of this habit he was expelled from school. He cannot accept a "no".
He is stubborn. He loses himself in his own world. He laughs and talks to himself about cartoons. He tends to masturbate and frequently touches his genitals. He has to kiss on the lips to show affection. He finds it difficult to express feelings.
He watches romantic films. In his favourite film the hero is played by a famous Bollywood actor, of whom Y. is a big fan: "I want to be famous too." In a song that Y. likes to sing, the actor and the heroine are very intimate.
He is addicted to chocolates and video games. Video games are the only way to calm him.
I observe that Y. does not make eye contact. He is hyperactive. Only his mother can control him. He cannot bear to see her sad; then he panics. In these situations he hugs her and asks: "Why are you sad? Are you angry with me?"
He could only be made to sit when he was reprimanded. He was so restless that he could not sit for a minute. He threatened my staff and said this was his office. He touched and played with everything he could get his hands on. He was uninhibited.
She had had difficulty becoming pregnant. Her infertility tests were unremarkable, but her husband had a low sperm count and the quality was not good. She was told that she would not have a healthy child.
The pregnancy came as a shock to her. She felt that the child would not be healthy; why should she bring such a child into the world? During the pregnancy she contracted typhoid and lost a lot of weight.

Prescription: Staphisagria C200, single dose
Follow ups
- January 2015: The remedy had a calming effect for a day.
Prescription: Staphisagria 1M, single dose
- January 2015: It had calmed him for a week. His carer was pleased that he now listened and was less aggressive. He began to express his affection and was less restless. He is beginning to make friends, but still cannot concentrate on anything.
Prescription: Staphisagria 10M, single dose
- April 2015: Y. is calmer and more composed than at previous visits, but still cannot concentrate on anything.
Prescription: Staphisagria 10M, single dose
- June 2015: The child seemed more grounded. He could draw to express himself. He had made friends at school and no longer hit them. He has developed some patience when he has to wait his turn. He could make eye contact and answered my questions. He even wished me a good morning.
Plan: Sac lac (placebo)
- August 2015: Y. came to the clinic with an acute tonsillitis. He cried and demanded a mobile phone so he could play games. He tried to grab the camera and behaved badly towards his mother when she refused his request.
Prescription: Staphisagria 10M, single dose
- August 2015: The infection had improved, but the pain was still present.
Prescription: Staphisagria 10M, single dose repeated
- October 2015: Y. shakes my hand and makes good eye contact. He has begun to take an interest in his surroundings. He enjoys school, can concentrate and copes better. His obsession with romantic films has decreased. He can express his affection without kissing. His mother says that he now asks many intelligent questions. He expresses his fear of his parents' separation and asks, "where would I live then?". He asks his mother how his friends have so much strength. He likes going out and enjoys observing his surroundings.
Plan: Sac lac
- November 2015: Y. is now much bigger and looks grown-up. He can sit in the room and talk about friends and school. He asks how to operate the camera. He leaves the consulting room and waits outside while his mother talks with me. In the past he would always have screamed and had tantrums at this point.
Plan: Sac lac
- December 2015: He seems calmer and more grounded. At first his energy was like a storm. Now he can sit in the consulting room and wait his turn. He communicates with me. His gaming addiction has decreased, although it is still present. He remains under observation.
Summary
The common factor in mother and son is their inability to express feelings, which manifests as excessive energy in the sexual sphere.
When I asked one generation further back, I learned that the grandmother had been abused in her marriage and had preferred to endure her suffering silently. Her case could be analysed with the following rubrics:
Mind; complaints from; abuse; does not want to give up the relationship: bar-c, staph
The grandmother constantly demanded that her daughter end any extramarital relationships, as she believed they would bring disgrace.
Mind; delusions; dishonoured, in disgrace: kali-s, mag-s, nat-s, nux-v, plat, rob, staph, sulph
It is therefore possible that the grandmother was also in a Staphisagria state.
The beauty of these case studies is that they show different aspects of the same remedy. Y. displayed a typical Staphisagria state with aggression, lack of expression and exaggerated and precocious sexuality.
The mother's case, however, could only be clarified by understanding the different stages of ego formation. Against this background of individuation we can recognise the same energetic pattern across three generations. It is a pattern in which a weak, naive and confused ego attracts abuse in a relationship. This leads to disharmony that can become transgenerational and is best eliminated with a homeopathic remedy. These cases made me think: Could we help more children with autism by taking into account the transgenerational patterns that may still be unresolved?
