I recently wrote about ankle injuries; now we move on to the lower limbs and the leg itself. A common injury, especially among runners, is medial tibial stress syndrome, also called shin splints. Whether caused by intense training or simply by repeated stress, shin splints cause pain along the length of the shinbone (the tibia). Although the name suggests a bone injury, it is actually damage to the tendons and the soft tissues that surround the bone. Johns Hopkins Medicine recommends the following on their website: “For effective treatment, avoid all activities that cause the pain.” Oh, heavens! Doesn’t that sound like the old doctor joke? “Doctor, my leg hurts when I do this!” “Then don’t do that!” Hmmm. Is it only me, or does that come across as a bit condescending? This is where homeopathy comes in! (And common sense). More than just restThere are several homeopathic remedies known to treat shin splints with a somewhat more effective approach. Rest will, of course, help. But a gentle, elegant remedy — without unwanted side effects — can shorten the necessary rest period. (And who wants a long downtime? Have you ever met a runner? They must run! It’s in their DNA. Asking them to rest is like asking a mosquito to stop buzzing — almost impossible.) Ruta and SymphytumIn my experience, Ruta graveolens 200 is the most effective homeopathic remedy for shin splints. Regardless of where the injured tendon is located, Ruta 200 taken twice daily has proven very effective. (Remember my blog post about the sprained ankle? The injured tendons in the ankle healed wonderfully with Ruta!) Additionally, one might consider Symphytum officinale 200, taken twice daily. Why Symphytum? Symphytum is the main remedy for bone injuries and also works on tendons and ligaments. In shin splints the bone is not broken, but the periosteum (the tissue that surrounds the shinbone) is usually also affected — suggesting that Symphytum could be a sensible addition. In fact, the two remedies — Ruta 200 and Symphytum 200 — can be taken together orally at the same time, forming a combination preparation. So a real one-two punch against shin pain! More information on dosage and potency of the remedies can be found here. But as I often say: Many roads lead to Rome. There are always other homeopathic remedies that may be appropriate. Homeopathy for people and animalsIf you want to delve deeper into the topic, I recommend a blog post I wrote some time ago: Here I write about our experience with the leg injury of our now-deceased poodle Buster. Please remember that both animals and people can benefit from well-chosen homeopathic remedies. The application does not differ between the two. It doesn’t matter whether you are a woman, a man, a child, a dog, a cat, a cow, a camel, a giraffe or a penguin — homeopathy helps, spread the word! Warm regards, Yours
