Carpal tunnel syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome

Modern life with all its conveniences.

Surely we should be experiencing less pain, right? But unfortunately we suffer more from pain today than ever before. Our lifestyle and prolonged sitting are responsible for a veritable pandemic of back pain, while our fascination with keyboards is leading to increasing injuries to wrists and hands.

Imagine being unable to hold a phone, grip a steering wheel or take a drink in your hand!

Carpal tunnel syndrome from overuse

Carpal tunnel syndrome. That could be the diagnosis. For the sufferer it manifests as tingling and numbness in the wrist and hand, progressing to unbearable pain and weakness.

And what causes carpal tunnel syndrome? Pressure on the median nerve as it passes through the carpal tunnel in the wrist.

There are various anatomical causes and health factors that can increase the risk. But all too often repetitive movements push an individual's predisposition for this condition over the tipping point.

Just think about it. Who among us nowadays doesn't spend a great deal of time in front of, or over, a keyboard?

Ruta and Symphytum as indicated remediesLimb system - Progress on all levels Rosina Sonnenschmidt

While I was on placement in India at the Prasanta Banerji Homeopathic Research Foundation, I also suffered cramps in my hand from overuse because I was taking too many notes. (I made handwritten records for over 100 cases a day!)

When faced with the conventional diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome in my practice, I often — with great success — prescribe Symphytum officinale 200 combined with Ruta graveolens 30, to be taken twice daily until the symptoms have significantly improved.

Symphytum is a specific remedy for bone ailments. Ruta is indicated for sprains, bone bruises and any complaints affecting cartilage, tendons or the surface of the bone. Ruta should therefore always be considered for carpal tunnel syndrome.

Hypericum for acute nerve pain

And of course I would add Hypericum perforatum 200 as needed for acute nerve pain. Hypericum 200 is simply indispensable in a well-stocked homeopathic first-aid kit. When dealing with pain from cuts, lacerations and penetrating wounds, always think of Hypericum — especially where nerve-rich tissue is affected. There are also reports that it can help with toothache. More information on dosing and potency of remedies can be found here.

Admittedly — it would be desirable to significantly reduce the repetitive movements that primarily cause carpal tunnel syndrome. So give the keyboard a rest now and then, move around, stretch and even support your wrists; all of that can help. But why reach for dangerous NSAIDs and corticosteroids as conventional medicine typically recommends?

Instead, homeopathy offers a way to gently restore the body to its natural state of health and function, without the severe consequences in other organs that often accompany conventional medications.

Homeopathy helps — spread the word!
