They say mothers have eyes in the back of their heads!
That's of course true. No matter what trouble a child is in, chances are the mother has a better view of it than the child realises.
Why is that? Because mothers worry. It's almost their job; it's in their genes, so to speak.
This is especially true when a child is ill. Mum stays up all night and watches with watchful eyes to see whether the situation might get worse or if the first glimmer of hope indicates the illness is starting to subside.
Homoeopathy for mothers
But who looks after the mother?
Homoeopathy, of course! We just need to choose the right remedy to provide the necessary support.
But just because I'm addressing mothers here doesn't mean I'm only speaking to those who have children. The "mothering" role can take many forms. Perhaps you are caring for a sick husband or a sick pet! In these cases you also take on the role of a mother!
Maybe you are looking after elderly parents with whom you have switched roles? Now you are the one who "mothers".
Or you may be in midlife and your parents are becoming dependent while your own children have not yet left home? That's caregiving at the highest level when you're responsible for BOTH! (This also applies, by the way, to fathers who find themselves in the mothering role.)
Arnica or Cocculus?
When a mother cares for someone all night, the lack of sleep becomes noticeable the next day. The feeling of physical exhaustion fits well with Arnica montana 200, to be taken twice daily until you feel fit again. You can find more about dosage and potency levels here.
Lack of sleep can make even the strongest among us more susceptible to illness. A dose of Arnica after a sleepless night therefore ensures we feel better the next day and have enough strength not to be felled by an illness.
A win–win situation!
But if Arnica has been taken for a while — say, a week — and mum is still exhausted, we need to rethink.
As soon as great worries and distress are part of the overall picture, we should consider Cocculus indicus 30, to be taken twice daily until a noticeable improvement occurs.
One of the key symptoms for Cocculus is "night-watching" — an old-fashioned expression mentioned in the materia medica of the old masters: staying awake all night over a loved one who is ill.
Night-watching always means stress and worry in addition to the physical strain that is unavoidable when you do not sleep at night.
Picture the vigil at the bedside — that's night-watching. And that is Cocculus indicus 30.
Emotional strain makes the difference
And although I present two different remedies here, we must choose the remedy that best fits the situation.
You've probably already noticed that the difference between the two remedies lies in the accompanying worry. If it's only about physical exhaustion after sleeplessness, then Arnica 200 is the right remedy. But if great worries are also present, Cocculus 30 is more appropriate.
Being a mother — for children, pets, partners or parents — is a full-time job. And even though today is Mother's Day, we cannot simply hand over the responsibility and worry for our families.
But when push comes to shove — and even the most steadfast of mothers falter — it's worth remembering homoeopathy. It stands by your side and helps you remain a pillar of strength for your family.
Happy belated Mother's Day!
Warmly,
Yours
