As soon as a child feels hot, most of us immediately reach for the fever thermometer. I argue against doing that.
For the sake of your child, refrain from fever-reducing drugs and antibiotics! You can manage without chemicals, because fever is the body's friend.
Fever is one of the body's natural defence mechanisms and is designed to help overcome illnesses such as flu, middle ear infection and cough in a natural way. Fever is important!
I cannot emphasise this enough: our body reacts to many illnesses with fever so that the illness can be healed by the body itself.
So why should we eradicate this healing mechanism by giving fever syrups and suppositories?
Of course no one wants to see their child suffer unnecessarily, but if we artificially suppress a fever we prevent the body from initiating important healing processes and achieving a full recovery.
What really good doctors say on the subject:
I am a great fan of Dr Robert Mendelsohn and know his book "How Your Child Can Grow Up Healthy - Even Without a Doctor" by heart. In this book he writes about the widespread misunderstanding that the height of a fever can provide information about the severity of an illness. Surveys have shown that the majority of parents believe a fever is already high at 38°C. A
temperature of 39°C is classified by all parents as a high fever. Most parents are also convinced that a high fever equates to a severe course of illness. I must state emphatically here: that is not the case. The temperature gives no indication of how ill the child actually is, or whether the fever is caused by bacteria or viruses. You gain nothing from constantly taking the temperature and anxiously tracking the course of the fever curve. This usually only leads to exaggerated fears and unsettles the child. Even if the thermometer climbs to 40°C, that need not be a warning sign.
American physician Dr William Sears also writes about the important function of fever and wants to encourage parents to view fever as a normal and healthy response of the body. Our immune system produces endogenous substances that raise body temperature in order to kill bacteria and viruses in this way.
Dr Thomas Cowan pointed out in his lecture series at the Weston A. Price Foundation that fever plays an important role in cancer prevention. He argues that children who are allowed to develop fever are less likely to develop cancer later in life than others.
The real danger during an acute illness does not come from the fever itself, but from the associated loss of fluids. Make sure your child drinks enough! Chicken and vegetable broth and ice lollies also supply the child with fluids.
At this point the big 'Yes, but...' usually appears. Even though I say it again and again, many parents do not believe me that things can be this simple.
If you want to support your child during an acute infection, I recommend the following treatment:
Ferrum phos. D6: The indicated remedy for inflammatory processes. Helps the child overcome the illness more quickly and avoid complications. The child will soon be fit as a fiddle.
The Banerji protocols have also proved very helpful: Eupatorium C30 together with Belladonna C30, to be taken every 3–12 hours depending on the severity of the illness. If you don't have the complex remedy to hand, you can buy the two medicines separately and take them together.
Please remember that homeopathy does not suppress illnesses but mitigates and shortens their course.
In the words of the famous physician Dr William Osler regarding pharmaceutical medicines: “The person who treats himself with pharmaceuticals must recover twice: once from the disease and once from the treatment.”
There is definitely a better way.
