Although the families Piperaceae and Lamiaceae are assigned common themes such as boredom and excitement, according to plant theory the differences prevail. In the Piperaceae the emphasis is on the carbon series and thus on childhood, which is characterised by boredom and ennui (Phase 6). In the Lamiaceae the themes of the 3rd to 6th rows of the periodic table are added, with a focus on the silver series. The exuberant temperament of the Lamiaceae and their urge outward have the phosphoric quality of Phase 5. Three case studies illustrate the similarities and differences between the two plant families. They also show the current state of plant theory, according to which the subfamilies of a plant family can sometimes be assigned to different subphases.
