Jan's Column: Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

The current news is that a virus has been discovered which triggers Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). It still needs to be confirmed, but it definitely seems to be the case that this syndrome occurs in connection with a virus. This discovery will drastically change attitudes towards Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and its patients, both medically and socially.

Previously, patients with CFS were mostly not taken seriously. They were considered not truly ill, as if their complaints were merely feigned or imagined. Consequently, insurers often refused to pay.

Now that a virus has been discovered, insurers will have to pay. Doctors will treat patients with CFS as genuine patients and show much more understanding towards them.

This change is in some ways rather odd, especially for the patients. For them, nothing has essentially changed; their symptoms are the same. It is only the label that means they are now taken seriously. This happens quite often in "conventional" medicine. Patients who could not be understood were sent away and treated like frauds. Doctors often say: "Madam, you are not ill." That can be very confusing for patients, because for them the complaints are very real — how can a doctor say they have nothing wrong with them?

Scientifically, such a situation is extremely undesirable. In the past the virus was also present, but because it was unknown, doctors could treat CFS as a "non-disease". In homeopathy something like this cannot happen. The symptoms are always taken seriously; they are what they are. For homeopathy, nothing fundamental has changed regarding Chronic Fatigue Syndrome as a result of the discovery of the virus, and it will continue to be treated as before. Knowledge about the virus is a welcome addition, but the symptoms and the treatment remain unchanged.
