May I share my husband Perry's confession with you? To shout it from the rooftops so the whole world can hear it. When we were young and newly in love, my spaghetti with meat sauce caused him enormous discomfort – heartburn, reflux and bloating.
Americans of Italian descent call it 'Agita'. In the end, it doesn't matter what you call it, it's unpleasant in any case.
Poor Perry suffered in silence back then because he didn't want to jeopardise our budding romance. Only after the wedding did he confess.
But we certainly weren't prepared to give up delicious spaghetti with meat sauce for life – after all I'm Italian through and through. We simply solved the problem homeopathically.
Homeopathy for indigestion
In past years I have written about various remedies that can successfully treat an irritated stomach. (See also Indigestion and digestive complaints). I would also like to address the subject within the framework of my newer method, Practical Homeopathy®, after all I'm continually developing professionally.
So let me introduce three homeopathic remedies for digestive complaints that you should definitely know and have in your home medicine cabinet.
- If your digestion troubles you after every meal – regardless of what was eaten – the appropriate remedy is often Nat phos D6. If the symptoms are really bad, it can be taken after every meal. However, as soon as the problems improve (and they definitely will!), you should take the remedy less often again. If the digestive complaints recur at a later time, you may again resort to the remedy more frequently!
Nat phos D6 is one of the remedies we use relatively often. That's why we always keep a box of it in the car in case 'Agita' strikes when we're not at home. (In my blog post David versus Goliath I write about how my father no longer had to take acid blockers thanks to Nat phos D6.)
- If the symptoms occur mainly after a visit to a restaurant, Pulsatilla 30 has proven extremely helpful.
To be clear: by 'restaurant' I mean any foods you don't normally eat. That means Pulsatilla may be indicated after a restaurant visit, a home‑cooked dinner at friends' or a new, elaborate recipe your stomach isn't yet used to.
The remedy has been particularly effective for straightening out the collateral damage after heavy foods such as macaroni and cheese or cake with whipped cream. But it is also useful against the unpleasant effects of dubious dishes with questionable ingredients.
If the symptoms are initially very severe, you should preferably take Pulsatilla 30 every 15 minutes for an hour. I've found that symptoms usually subside after the first two doses.
Homeopathic prophylaxis
I've also recommended to my clients that they take the remedy prophylactically if they are absolutely sure an upcoming event will cause indigestion. For example, if a child quickly develops digestive problems after eating something with cream, it is almost inevitable that the upcoming birthday party – with lots of ice cream and cake – will cause stomachache. So why not put an end to it in advance and give the child Pulsatilla 30 on the way to the party? You can find more about potencies and dosing in homeopathy here.
- The third remedy is also the best known; almost everyone knows Nux vomica 200. It is a fantastic remedy when other symptoms are present (such as nausea or constipation alternating with diarrhoea) or when the complaints were triggered by excessive consumption of indulgent foods or substances. The other two remedies I described above (Nat phos and Pulsatilla) are not specific to overeating.
Nux vomica is also the remedy I've long used when alcohol has been involved. (Hmm, maybe one should use that on New Year's Eve...).
Be that as it may, you're now armed! You know three remedies that will ensure 'Agita' has no chance – whether you're courting an Italian woman, enjoying a large portion of ice cream or toasting the New Year.
And please remember – nobody likes digestive complaints, so spread the word. Homeopathy helps!
Warmly,
Yours,
