Mate has ancient roots as an everyday drug and is today widely and diversely used, especially in South America.
In its effects and symptomatology, mate shows great similarities to other stimulants. In addition to caffeine and theobromine, the main active ingredient mateine stimulates the central nervous system and increases psychomotor performance. In drug testing, opposite symptoms such as mental fatigue, drowsiness, detachment and fear of death were also observed. Yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis) was first tested in 2000 by Gustavo Dominici with a small group of Italian homeopaths.
