Epidemic genius - EHEC

News

Genius epidemicus - EHEC

We have been asked repeatedly for tips on therapy for EHEC and haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS):
  • Are there homeopathic therapy options?
  • Which remedies are indicated?
  • What else can one do if hygiene regulations are already being followed?
  • Are there options for prevention?
  • Which remedies can be given if someone is already ill?
  • How can it be prevented that EHEC patients develop HUS?
******************************************************************************

The clinical picture has so far been described as follows:

In previously healthy individuals suddenly critically ill, cannot speak, cannot move, series of epileptic seizures.

10–15% of those affected have neurological disturbances, even without HUS.

More often onset with confusion, excitability, delirious. Drowsy, double vision, tremor, aphasia, apraxia, swallowing disorders, cranial nerve deficits, pyramidal symptoms, myoclonus, lowering of the seizure threshold. Then epilepsy, stupor, coma, may require ventilation.

Neurological disturbances occurring simultaneously with or during the course of increasing gastroenterological symptoms.

Activation of the complement cascade: immunologically induced damage.

Almost always thrombocytopenia, but without intracranial haemorrhage.

Antibiotics, including cotrimoxazole, are harmful (increased toxin release).
Eculizumab (monoclonal antibody, stops the terminal step of the complement cascade) appears helpful.

Hamburg is at the centre of the epidemic. The complications represent an immunological overreaction, similar to the suspected cytokine storm in the Spanish flu. Therefore young, healthy people often become ill rather than the elderly and frail. A notable preponderance of women.

Remedy suggestions based on this information:

  • Crotalus horridus (thrombocytopenia, speech centre affected, sudden onset).
  • Oenanthe (if epilepsy is predominant, sudden onset),
  • Cuprum (epilepsy, diarrhoea, was often among the best remedies in cholera epidemics).

So far we have no information from those directly involved about the homeopathic remedy picture of EHEC. Therefore our recommendation is given with reservation:

  • Nosode Colibacillinum C30 (direct relation to the pathogen, bloody diarrhoea, renal failure with haemolytic uraemic syndrome HUS).
See Louis Klein, Miasms and Nosodes, page 411

  • According to press descriptions of a patient's clinical picture, repertorised according to Bönninghausen (polarity analysis) and RefWorks: Mercurius corrosivus (toxic and destructive, bloody diarrhoea, intestinal cramps, renal failure, confused state). Alternatively Bryonia, possibly also in alternation

If anyone already has experience with the precise symptom picture, we would be grateful for any feedback and can refine our recommendation.
