Halloween was not that long ago and we've had enough of all the sweets! Please, keep your hands off the chocolate. The reasons are obvious: Many years ago, when I still answered the phone in the office myself, I received the same desperate and worried call twice: “Oh my God! I think I'm having a heart attack and I'm going to die. My heart is racing so fast I fear it's going to jump out of my chest!” One of the two callers was actually already on her way to the emergency room! And both calls reached me in early November. (Have you any idea why?) What does chocolate have to do with a racing heart?Well, I worked out fairly quickly what was going on with the two callers — partly because I had experienced the symptoms myself and partly because the timing revealed a lot about the problem. I immediately asked the two women whether they had eaten too much chocolate on Halloween. “Hmm, I definitely ate a lot of it last night and also some this morning.” “More than usual?” “Well, quite a lot more. My children collected a whole lot of sweets and brought them home… so, to be honest…” Both of them hemmed and hawed rather embarrassingly. Yes, exactly. The two rather panicky women were not having a heart attack (which in women usually presents with different symptoms). It was the CHOCOLATE. Nux vomica – the great detoxifierFor the symptom pattern described above, Nux vomica 200 is the perfect remedy of choice, especially if nausea is also present (Nux vomica 30 can be taken as an alternative, but my personal favourite potency is 200). If the symptom picture shows exclusively as a racing heart and/or palpitations without nausea or other gastrointestinal complaints, then Coffea cruda 200 is very likely the more appropriate remedy. It's worth mentioning at this point that in our younger years we can shrug off the occasional hangover after drinking or overindulgence without major problems. But as we age our bodies — and therefore our metabolism — change. The excesses we got away with before we can quite simply no longer afford. Coffee, wine and other sinsThis applies to many other things too. Coffee keeps us awake for nights, after a glass of wine we feel awful and chocolate gives us a racing heart. Many of my students and clients are horrified and tell me they had never experienced this before. Well then, welcome to the club. We're not spring chickens any more, dear sisters! These are natural changes that we all go through and we should learn to read the signs. And in the rare cases when we ignore that small, quiet voice in our head, it's useful to have the appropriate homeopathic remedy in the home medicine cabinet. It will then save us from ourselves. So put the chocolate down and pass it on – homeopathy helps! Warmly, Yours
