Calypte Anna (hummingbird) in ADHD – a case report

News

Client: C. B., 10 years old.

Main complaint: ADHD, May 2005

C. B. is a very handsome boy with sparkling eyes and dark hair; he is bursting with energy. With his small, wiry body he dashes around my office. His restless nature does not allow him to sit down even for a short moment. When he first came to see me he was taking Ritalin for ADHD and Benadryl for his sleep disturbances.

Case history:

"Most of the time I am incredibly happy. Then I'm out of control. I have lots and lots of energy. But I can sit down to read. I can read the same book three or four times. But I like music best. I play the clarinet and I love my band."

C. B.'s mother reports that he hums to himself when he is not playing the clarinet. "He sings and hums all day long. He races around the house all the time; he cannot even sit still at mealtimes. But then he has moments when he runs through the house, then suddenly stops and daydreams. He is somewhere else in his thoughts and stands there as if petrified. Then something brings him back and he dashes through the house again."

His mother says that he is very intelligent and gifted, but cannot realise his potential because he is either too distracted or too dreamy. C. B. has only a small appetite and eats "like a bird". He craves sweets, even though his mother strictly forbids them. He even sneaks into the kitchen to help himself to pieces of sugar from the cupboard. His mother calls him 'Professor Heimlich', cover_012009.jpg because he "quietly and secretly flies into the kitchen, steals the sugar and then disappears just as secretly."

C. B. is very sensitive to pain and reacts melodramatically to injuries. He is also very sensitive when his classmates tease and make fun of him because he is small and agile. It makes him furious.

He is allergic to grass pollen, house dust and mould.

Prescription

Tuberculinum aviare C200

Follow-up after six weeks:

C. B.'s restlessness had improved a little, but his craving for sweets had become worse. I asked him again what was most difficult for him:

"I find it difficult to control myself. I feel like I have to rush around everywhere. And then I have to stop from time to time because a thought comes and just hovers. Like this:"

C. B. runs through my office and suddenly stops. He stares into space, stands on one leg, spreads his arms like wings and lets them flutter.

Prescription 2:

Calypte Anna (Anna's hummingbird) C200

Follow-up after six weeks:

"I feel GREAT. I don't feel hyper and crazy any more. I think the homeopathic remedy is simply the best. School has got better. I sleep better at night and I'm not so tired at school any more. I can concentrate now. I feel calmer inside."

Follow-up after six weeks: (12 weeks after the first dose)

C. B.'s mother says he is better than ever. He can finally concentrate and finish things. His grades have improved and his teachers note that Ritalin helps very well! His mother admits that she has not given him Ritalin for months. C. B.'s craving for sweets has reduced, and instead he is eating more. His allergic symptoms have also gone; he no longer complains about them. His mother happily reports: "The big change is that he finally has friends. He comes home and hangs out in his room with his friends, instead of flying around the house." – Just like a hummingbird!

C. B. is still doing well. Twice in the past year he had small relapses and each time responded well to the remedy.
