Bee venom – effectively removed with homeopathy

Bee venom –  effectively eliminated with homeopathy

Figure 1: She looks harmless, yet her sting can become dangerous. From a small swelling to an anaphylactic shock.

When my then 8-year-old son was stung by a bee in the foot, his otherwise angelic face turned into a frightening and macabre mask. His lips were so swollen they looked as if they might burst, and his eyes sat deep in swollen sockets.

It was clearly an anaphylactic reaction – and a pretty serious matter.

Always think of Ledum with bee stings

At that time we lived in the country and had a well-stocked medicine cabinet with the most important homeopathic remedies. I was therefore grateful that I had homeopathic Ledum palustre C200 to hand. As with my other treatment protocols, I use Ledum based on the specific pathology. That means most people stung by a bee respond positively to the remedy.

In this case too, Ledum acted exactly as it should. Within minutes of taking Ledum, our son’s shoulders relaxed, his lips reduced a little, and he fell asleep in his father’s arms.

When he woke up 10 minutes later I gave him the remedy again. Afterwards I gave him Ledum every 15 minutes for a total of five hours. (An important note: I chose short intervals between doses because my son’s anaphylactic reaction was life-threatening. With less severe conditions, longer intervals between doses are required.)

The next morning his face was still swollen, but not nearly as much, and he played as usual.

Not even a month later the same curious boy was stung in the hand by another bee. Once again we had to act immediately. This time only his hand swelled, albeit quite badly. But at least the reaction was not as systemic as the last time.

I am almost embarrassed to report that by the end of the summer he had another run-in with a bee. This time he was stung in the upper arm.

When we gave him Ledum C200 here too, only the pain needed relieving. That was because there was hardly any reaction. His body had learned to adapt to the venom and could cope with it better.

Figure 2: Bee stings can be severe and very painful.

Then and now: the bee venom strikes again.

My son will no doubt consider it a just punishment: decades later, as I sit here writing about his childhood bee stings shortly before his wedding, I myself was stung by a bee just a few days before his wedding!

It happened while I was walking on the beach near our house in Florida. I must have stepped on a bee. In any case it certainly prevented me from going on. Ouch! I went straight into the salty Atlantic and after about 15 minutes the pain disappeared in the healing waves of the ocean.

When I got home I honestly didn’t think about the sting or taking Ledum.

Then, around midnight, it hit me – and hard – with rigours, fever and pain everywhere ... in the joints, muscles, everywhere. Even then I did not associate it with the bee sting. At first I assumed I had eaten something bad.

I monitored my symptoms and took the following remedies (the cause did not matter at first): Rhus tox, Arnica and Hypericum. The pain in my joints and muscles eased within about 20 minutes and I fell asleep. (This is exactly what we watch for when using homeopathy.) When I woke a few hours later I was still exhausted, but the pain, fever and rigours were gone. For the lingering tiredness I took Gelsemium.

Late realisation – better late than never

Figure 3: Bee venom is a potent toxin. Reactions to a bee sting can range up to an anaphylactic shock. In those cases medical help is required.

The next morning it finally dawned on me. Could my condition during the night have been a consequence of the bee sting? After a brief search I found that my symptoms matched the known side effects of bee venom exactly. The subsequent swelling around my ankle and the toe joint next to the sting site indicated that the bee sting had set more in motion than I had expected.

A few days later my ankle was still swollen and quite itchy. I reached for Ledum 200C as the antidote. More information on dosing and potencies of the remedy can be found here. One dose and I felt better again. Admittedly, my new wedding shoe was a little tight because of the swelling, but I was able to enjoy the wedding celebration and hardly gave a thought to the poor bee.

In homeopathy symptoms are our important helpers

This experience is a good teaching example in homeopathy. Although I had forgotten the bee sting (or simply failed to link it to my nocturnal fever and pains), I decided to treat my symptoms as they presented. In other words: instead of treating the bee sting, I followed my symptoms, and the homeopathy worked!

When I later realised that the bee sting underlay my swelling and itch, the remedy appropriate to the cause of my symptoms – Ledum 200 – removed the last complaints.

Symptoms are gifts. If the cause of an injury or illness is not obvious to us, the symptoms can help us choose the right remedy. If we later discover the cause, we can always return to the corresponding protocol ... if needed.

Isn’t homeopathy wonderful? Homeopathy helps – spread the word!

Warm regards,

Yours
