Susy has suffered from headaches and sinus infections since she developed Pfeiffer's glandular fever as a young adult at college. She has long known that her headaches are linked to changes in the weather – every time the air pressure and the barometer change, the headaches come, often followed by a sinus infection.
When painkillers fail
She tried painkillers, antibiotics and even cortisone, but nothing helped the pain. Worse, Susy learned that cortisone can cause bone loss. She suspects it was no coincidence that she recently broke her ankle in a relatively minor fall.
Although Susy had been rather sceptical about alternative therapies, her mistrust vanished as soon as she consulted a homoeopath. There she learned that homoeopathy helps gently, has no side effects and can be taken alongside conventional medicines. She finally had hope that not only would her headaches improve, but she could also stop taking the painkillers she had to rely on and which had significant side effects. (And that's what happened!)
Detailed case history
You see, the homoeopath listened attentively as Susy described her symptoms and recommended taking Kalium bichromicum 30, as needed every 1–3 hours until the pain eased. Other symptoms indicating this remedy included the severe pain over the eyes and the sinus pressure that worsened on bending forward.
Despite her initial scepticism, Susy had to admit that the headaches eased as soon as she began taking the remedy. Even the post-nasal drip that had been part of her daily life for God-knows-how-long disappeared.
After a few weeks Susy was free of her headaches – even when a storm raged and the air pressure plummeted.
A few weeks later she noticed that she had not had a sinus infection for a long time – and that even though she was no longer taking antibiotics.
Susy's sinus troubles were over!
Kalium bichromicum for pollen allergy
Now let's hear Lucy's story.
Lucy suffered terribly from a pollen allergy with sinus pain triggered by changes in the weather. Many years ago she tried desensitisation, but found that her symptoms worsened instead of improving as expected. Her doctor told her then that it was normal for symptoms to get worse with age. 'That's life,' he said, and she would just have to accept it. Meanwhile her personal list of allergy triggers grew longer and longer.
She found that her symptoms improved when she avoided gluten and pasteurised dairy products, but many of the allergies remained. Fluctuations in air pressure still caused pain in the sinuses, starting over the eyes and radiating into the sinuses. Every time the air pressure changed or the pollen were in the air, her sinuses became so painful that she could hardly get through her day.
After she came across Kalium bichromicum and my blog post online, she researched Kali bichromicum further.
Kalium bichromicum – a brief materia medica
She learned that Kali bichromicum is the remedy of choice for acute or chronic sinusitis. The homoeopathic remedy is prepared from potassium dichromate, a bright orange, caustic compound that is also used in paint and battery manufacture, in leather tanning, as an etchant, for glass cleaning and in photography. In its raw state this substance is harmful to health.
Wait. What was that again?
So, for those who don't know: homoeopathic remedies are often derived from poisonous substances. Once the source material has been made usable by the homoeopathic processes of dilution and succussion, a harmful material becomes a helpful support – and in many cases even a healing medicine. In this instance the remedy is used for thick, stringy, yellowish to greenish discharges, primarily from the nose but also from the throat or larynx.
The 'Kali bi' cough is a dry, violent cough that often persists for a long time without improvement. The cough is usually worse on inhaling cold, damp air and in the early morning hours and improves in warm air.
The sufferer feels pressure and fullness in the sinuses and very severe pain at the root of the nose, which improves when the affected spot is pressed firmly. Patients also often report a feeling of fullness or pressure in the middle ear or migraine-like headaches that occur at night.
When a low-pressure system passed through again and triggered a severe bout of a runny nose, thick mucus and intense sinus pain, Lucy took Kalium bichromicum 30. Further information on dosage and potency can be found here.
Lucy took the remedy again two hours later because she knew it might take three to four doses for an improvement to appear. After the third dose Lucy slept for two hours. That was unusual for her, but anyone familiar with homoeopathy knows that sleep indicates the correct remedy has been chosen (and that healing is well under way).
Previously the complaints had lasted much longer, with pain and tiredness lingering for days after the acute episode. But this time, when she woke up she found that the headaches were not only less severe but completely gone! Lucy was full of energy and pain-free, even though the weather was still unfavourable for her.
A month later, when heavy rain finally came after a long drought, Lucy again experienced her typical headaches. This time they were not as severe. Nevertheless she took another dose of Kali bichromicum 30 and promptly slept for almost half an hour. Two whole years have passed since the first dose and Lucy is still pain-free!
Gentle homoeopathy for the whole family
Thanks to their experience with Kali bi, Lucy and Susy know first-hand why homoeopathy has a reputation for treating self-limiting illnesses and ensuring that complaints do not recur. The two women know the difference between 'I feel okay' and radiant, genuine health.
Gentle, effective and inexpensive homoeopathy has given them back a measure of quality of life and neither woman will ever want their old life back. Susy is currently working on losing a few extra pounds with homoeopathic support and Lucy plans to tackle her mother's osteoarthritis and her husband's irritable bowel.
That's how it works. We can't help but extend our healing arts.
So if someone close to you is once again troubled by a low-pressure front, you can shelter them under your homoeopathic 'umbrella'. Kalium bichromicum helps – spread the word!
Warmly,
Yours,
