Abies canadensis for frequent urination

News

Case

This case has a very interesting and straightforward course. It shows how well homeopathy can help, even when only a single symptom is used for the prescription.

A young woman in her mid-twenties came to see me in April 2004 because she has severe urinary urgency during the day. She has a feeling of fullness in the bladder but cannot pass urine when she sits on the toilet. Then again there are times when she has to urinate every 20 minutes. This had recently also happened to her in a cinema. She often experiences this urgency, but sometimes it is not quite so bad. The urge in the bladder usually begins shortly after she has drunk something. She has had the problem for two or three years.

I asked her to tell me something about herself. She said she becomes stressed easily by her work and her social life (she has many friends and is often out and about). She has low self-confidence. She is often thirsty, feels dehydrated and gets cold easily. I also asked her about her likes and dislikes regarding food. She does not like fish, but she loves artichokes, Thai cuisine and mangoes.

Five years earlier she had an ovarian cyst.

Analysis

That was the only information I obtained from the patient. There was no more. I did not want to ask further because I did not get the impression she would tell me more about herself. Obviously there were not many pointers for a good prescription. Only the patient's strong craving for artichokes was unusual. The craving for Thai food and mango is nothing special.Repertorium-fuer-den-homoeopathischen-Praktiker-Henri-Voisin.11526.jpg

Rubric: Generalities; Foods and Drinks; Artichokes; Aversion: abies-c.; acon.; mag-c.; sulph.

In the repertory there was only the rubric 'Aversion to artichokes', but usually desire and aversion are two sides of the same coin. Therefore abies-c. was the remedy of choice for this patient. In the Materia Medica I found further symptoms that confirmed my choice: 'craving for artichokes' and 'dryness of the mouth'. She is a rather large person and borderline overweight. I asked her about her eating habits to confirm my prescription. She tended to eat a lot, a characteristic symptom of Abies canadensis.

Prescription: Abies canadensis C30, seven doses, then to be taken when needed or alternatively once a week. Within a few minutes of taking the remedy the pressure on the bladder eased. No further appointments were necessary. End of case.
