These days we are learning an entire alphabet soup of virus names. Currently, for example, RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) is everywhere in the news because it’s making the rounds among schoolchildren.
Before we all clutch our throats in worry, let me say that RSV is nothing new. It’s a well-known seasonal illness that typically circulates each year alongside colds and the flu.
But we can’t keep freaking out every time a new combination of letters appears on the front page. Viruses have coexisted with humans since the dawn of time.
Viruses are not the end of the world! Viruses are a completely natural part of the world.
Believe it or not, though, one of the hardest things in homeopathy is often choosing the right remedy for a cold or the flu.
And why? Well, there are several reasons.
Vague symptoms make remedy selection difficult
First, at the start of a viral infection we usually don’t know exactly what we are dealing with. All we know is: “I don’t feel well.” Many viruses present in similar ways and we cannot distinguish them from each other until they have developed further.
Furthermore, the same virus can present differently in different people, so we often don’t have a clear thread to identify a definitive homeopathic remedy for every specific virus.
And there can be many specific variants – several variations on the same theme, even within a single virus. (Years ago people didn’t even know the term “variant.” But since 2020 it’s hard to get through a day without hearing that word.)
And finally, viruses usually evolve over time. A patient may first notice fatigue and weakness, then a sore throat, then fever, then vomiting, then coughing, then lung congestion, and so on. The choice of the most effective homeopathic medicine therefore depends on the symptoms at the current stage of the illness — the present snapshot.
Consequently, it can be a little frustrating, because most people come to homeopathy to treat the colds and flu that occur in their families! If they then don’t see success (because of these complex factors), they become discouraged and stop pursuing homeopathic knowledge. But oddly, sobering illnesses (like urinary tract infections or middle ear infections) are sometimes easier to treat precisely because they are not so complex.
With respiratory infections that are already somewhat advanced we don’t focus on the name of the disease so much as on the observable and present symptoms.
A case for homeopathy
Here’s a typical example: Laurie knew that someone in her family was inevitably going to get a cold or the flu, so she had stocked a homeopathic first-aid kit and knew how to use the remedies (or where to look to refresh her memory).
Well done, Laurie!
So when Laurie’s first-grader came home from school with a respiratory virus, Laurie watched attentively as the illness developed. For the initial weakness and other developing symptoms she first consulted my blog post. If wheezy breathing or asthma-like symptoms appeared, Laurie would consult my piece on the homeopathic Banerji protocols. And if pneumonia were to develop, Laurie was prepared with Homeopathy and Pneumonia.
See how it works?
Laurie had the symptoms under control with homeopathy — regardless of which specific pathogen in the virus alphabet it happened to be. This made her daughter’s symptoms manageable and the illness less severe.
The Banerji protocol for colds
But when I personally face a cold, the flu, or another respiratory virus, my main pillars in homeopathic treatment are the Banerji protocol and acting quickly. I have been able to ward off many viruses with Aconitum napellus 200 in combination with Bryonia alba 30, which I take at the first hint that a virus may have entered my body. Not later or just before bed. Not the next day. I mean IMMEDIATELY at the first sign that I sense an illness coming on. (And I repeat the dose every few hours — depending on the severity of the illness — until I feel much better or until the symptoms call for a different remedy.)
And it’s not uncommon that over the years my family and I have become ill less often, thanks to this knowledge.
That’s why I recommend that everyone who is susceptible to viruses (and that’s all of us) keep Aconitum 200 and Bryonia 30 within easy reach in their work bag or handbag. Please don’t leave the house without these two remedies! For more information on dosing and potencies see here.
Quick action is essential
Everything would have been different if Laurie had picked her daughter up from school and heard the first little “Mum, my throat hurts.” Armed with Aconitum 200 and Bryonia 30 in her bag, Laurie could have pulled the car over and administered this powerful homeopathic protocol immediately — right then — instead of waiting until later that evening when they got home.
And who knows? Maybe the virus wouldn’t have spread so much. It’s much easier to contain a viral illness before it becomes severe than to wait until the virus fully takes hold and the hospital becomes necessary. Once we’re in hospital, we lose all control. So this is about prevention — about not letting the virus get that far. We aim to keep it at a level that is perfectly acceptable in the lives of all children — a cold or flu each year and recovering without difficulty or complications.
So I bet Laurie will have Aconitum 200 and Bryonia 30 with her next time. How do I know? Because Laurie is the kind of mother I admire — a lioness among mothers — resilient, tough, thick-skinned, fearless and fierce when necessary!
Make our viral mantra “Be prepared, be quick and be informed” your motto. With this strategy we can generally keep our families’ respiratory illnesses well under control, whether it’s a cold, the flu, RSV or even one of the variants of the “C-word.” And that’s powerful!
(And a bit of homemade chicken soup won’t hurt either! Just don’t let the many letters confuse you.)
Homeopathy helps — spread the word!
Warmly,
Yours
