Homeopathy and Hay Fever

Five important remedies

As the medical team at the Kandern practice, we asked ourselves for five remedies that spontaneously come to mind for hay fever. While such a restriction to a few remedies can be problematic in a more complex clinical picture—not like an epidemic, which can be defined quite well by a few main remedies—it is useful for the beginning to limit oneself to a few remedies and to differentiate them as simply as possible. We agreed on the following five remedies and assigned each one a specific symptom that distinguishes it from the usual symptoms of hay fever. This makes orientation very simple. We usually give the remedies in D6 or D12, once or twice daily or, depending on the effect, more often. The four remedy pictures are discussed in detail here .

Wyethia - with itching of the palate

Sabadilla - with violent sneezing

Euphrasia - with emphasis on eye symptoms

Histaminum hydrochloricum - "restless" impatience, cannot wait

Autologous blood C7 - very often useful, even without specific symptoms

The hay fever chapter

Because this simple selection is not always sufficient, a more differentiated version is appended here. It comes from the newly translated Repertory of the excellent and original French grandmaster of homeopathy, Henri Voisin. His materia medica was always a good guide for us because it contains original new remedies and is always based on his own practical experience. Voisin's outstanding clinical repertory is currently being made available to the public again after being lost for a long time. It lists numerous disease pictures alphabetically and differentiates the most important remedies.

Hay Fever

During the symptom-free period: For hay fever one gives high potencies of the remedies for the attacks in February and in April or May (before the start of flowering) and adds: Pollen C15, Histaminum pulmonis C15 or 30, and for tuberculous terrain TUB. C9.

During the attacks: One gives the remedy for the nasal symptoms (or for the eyes and nose) in medium potencies. In hay fever or allergic rhinitis one can add Histaminum pulmonis C6 (5 pellets every 2 days).

Watery, excoriating discharge

? Much sneezing

   With inflammation of the eyes:
      ALL-C. – soreness, burning worse in a warm room.
      ARS. – burning of the eyes and nostrils better from warmth and worse from 1–3 a.m. Sneezing does not relieve.
      NAPHTIN. – with the desire to rub the nose. Spasmodic cough.
      NUX-V. – worse in the morning in bed or on waking, better in the open air; congested nose at night.

   Without inflammation of the eyes:
      CIMIC. – worse from draughts, cough when lying down.

? Little sneezing

KALI-I. – and pain in the frontal sinuses. Rhinitis better in a warm room; worse from heat.

Watery, little or not excoriating discharge

? Much sneezing

   With inflammation of the eyes:
      EUPHR. – acrid tears. Swelling of the lids; worse in the evening and in cold air.
      PHLE. – hay fever at the start of flowering.
      SABAD. – worse in a cold room, in the open air and from the scent of flowers.
      SUCC-AC. – itching of the nostrils and lids; worse in the open air.

   Without inflammation of the eyes:
      CYCL. – with itching in the ear canal and better in the open air.
      LYCPR. – worse from pollen and all kinds of dust and better in a warm room.

? Little sneezing

      AMBRO. – tearing. Itching of the lids (rhinitis at the end of the flowering season).

Little or no discharge

? With inflammation of the eyes

      ARUND-D. – itching of the nostrils, lids, ear canal and sometimes the palatal arch.
      KALI-S-CHR. – fine threads across the nostrils.
      SOLID. – liver insufficiency. Injected eyes and burning lacrimation.

? Without inflammation of the eyes

      STICT. – feeling of fullness and obstruction at the root of the nose. Persistent and unsuccessful urge to blow the nose. Sneezing. Sometimes cough.
      ARUND. – itching of the nostrils and the palate.
      SOLID. — liver insufficiency. Injected eyes and burning lacrimation.

With breathlessness
? Ars., Chlor. (with glottic spasm), Naphtin., Stict.

With cough
? Ambro., Cimic. (worse when lying and in the first part of the night), Arund., Cupr-act. (excoriating and burning discharge worse from cold), NAPHTIN., Sang. (worse from floral scent; yellowish, excoriating discharge).

With itching of the soft palate
? Arund., Arund-d. (and ear canal), Wye. (choanae, little sneezing).
