The maca plant originates in the high Andes of Peru. Nowadays it is also cultivated, including in China.

Its survival power and resistance – in the bleak mineral volcanic soils of the Andes under severe weather conditions – is concentrated in the long bulbous root (hypocotyl). This is where it stores the nutrients that ensure its survival in the adverse conditions at a height of 4000 metres.
