Tulsi - Ocimum sanctum, syn. Ocimum tenuiflorum, is an annual plant known as holy basil, growing up to 1 metre high with many finely haired branches and stems that are woody at the base, bearing spikes 6–8 cm long with white to reddish flowers. In Ayurvedic nutrition the leaves, seeds and root are used. The finely and gently (below 40°C) milled powder from the leaves comes from Fair Trade and organic projects in India and Sri Lanka.
According to Ayurveda, this product supports the harmonious balance of the doshas by balancing the six tastes; its predominant tastes are pungent and bitter.
