Zeaxanthin
Zeaxanthin belongs to the group of carotenoids and, together with lutein, is the only carotenoid present in the macula of the eye — the area of sharpest vision. While lutein is mainly concentrated in the peripheral area of the macula, zeaxanthin is most prevalent in the centre. The body cannot synthesise zeaxanthin itself; it must be obtained from the diet. Natural sources include maize, peppers, egg yolk and orange-coloured fruit. In dietary supplements, zeaxanthin is often used together with lutein.
