Application
How the enema with the Klyso pump works:
The basic construction of this type of enema is an elliptical rubber bulb with an opening at each end. Two tubes can be attached to it, one for drawing up the enema solution and the other for pumping the solution into the bowel. Valves on the rubber bulb control the direction of flow of the irrigation solution.
The enema is administered lying down. You should have everything within easy reach. As the large intestine bends to the left from the rectum, you should lie on your left side so the enema solution can flow into the bowel with the aid of gravity. The enema solution (one-third to one-half litre) is warmed to body temperature and placed in a bowl. The irrigation solution can also contain bicarbonate of soda, saline or chamomile. The preparation of the irrigation solution should be carried out in consultation with your doctor.
The enema tube, lubricated with petroleum jelly, is now gently inserted into the anus using a twisting motion.
The enema solution can then be pumped from the bowl into the bowel using the rubber bulb. Typically the entire volume is required, which should remain in the bowel for a maximum of 7 minutes. You may feel the urge to evacuate earlier, in which case you should go to the toilet. Bedridden patients must be provided with a bedpan. The compressed rubber bulb can now be removed from the enema tubing, after which the tip of the enema tube can be carefully withdrawn from the anus.
