Duckweed (Lat. Lemna minor) belongs to the plant communities of slow-flowing or still waters and occurs worldwide. They are the smallest known flowering plants, usually consisting only of a small green floating leaf and a rootlet about 10 mm long hanging freely in the water. Through vegetative propagation, additional plantlets develop from the floating leaf, which can cover entire ponds from June to September. Duckweed contains traces of iodine and vitamin B12.
