Standardised bitter melon extract with 10% charantin
Botanical: Momordica charantia
Sanskrit: Karela
Chinese: Kǔguā
German: bitter melon, bitter cucumber, balsam pear, balsam apple, bitter spring gourd
English: Chinese melon, bitter gourd
Bitter melon belongs to the gourd family (Cucurbitaceae). Its fruit has been popular for centuries in many countries, particularly across Asia. The plant's name refers to the bitter taste of the fruit.
The bitter melon fruit contains a mixture of phytosterols (structural components of plant cell membranes, similar to cholesterol in animal cell membranes), called charantin, as well as a specific protein that is structurally similar to insulin. Other constituents include proteins as well as small amounts of alkaloids and saponins, and also calcium, carotene, riboflavin, vitamin A and vitamin C. The protein, mineral and carbohydrate content is high.
Fairvital's bitter melon extract is standardised to contain 10% charantin. This corresponds to 150 mg charantin per recommended daily intake (3 capsules).
In this dietary supplement from Fairvital the bitter melon extract has been combined with chromium picolinate.
