The use of vertebrates in healing has a rather modest history. Indeed, the history of medicine relegates the use of parts of toads, salamanders, snakes, bats, owls, rhinoceroses, or bears to the realm of superstition rather than viewing them as a serious source of ingredients from which to manufacture healing preparations. In homeopathy too, vertebrates have played a subordinate role until recently.
