About us – 45 years of Narayana Verlag
“Take your health into your own hands” – this credo has accompanied Narayana Verlag for 45 years. What began in 1981 as the initiative of two physicians developed into a versatile, owner-run company with over 3 million satisfied customers. In addition to naturopathic literature, the publisher offers, under the “Unimedica” brand, a wide range of high-quality dietary supplements, superfoods and natural cosmetics.
The Beginnings – a Friendship with a Shared Vision
Everything began at medical school: Dr. Herbert Sigwart and Dr. Ulrich Welte were united by the observation that conventional medicine often reached its limits with chronic illnesses. In search of alternatives they discovered homeopathy and naturopathy. At Dr Max Otto Bruker's Lahnhöhe Clinic – a pioneer of wholefood nutrition – they learned more than 50 natural healing methods and experienced remarkable treatment success.
Founding of the publishing house and joint medical practice in the Black Forest
At the Berlin Health Days in 1980 they gave lectures to more than 1,200 medical students. The interest this sparked in specialist literature marked the birth of the Narayana publishing house, which was founded on 1 February 1981. In 1983 a joint medical practice opened in Kandern in the southern Black Forest. Medical work was initially the main focus – until Markus Kuntosch joined in 1999 and Dr Katrin Sigwart in 2006, when the publishing activities gained significant momentum.
Over 700 book titles and in-house clinical research
Today the programme comprises over 700 titles of its own on naturopathy, nutrition, sport and psychology. Under the umbrella of “Narayana Research” clinical studies were also carried out, including a multicentre study of dietary supplements at eight German heart centres.
Unimedica – a new product range
In 2018 “Unimedica” was launched – initially for books such as the Spiegel bestseller How Not to Die by Dr Michael Greger, and later for independently developed dietary supplements. With over 400 products – from OPC and coenzyme Q10 to minerals and natural cosmetics – Unimedica is a success story. The formulations are largely produced in Germany and avoid unnecessary additives. A special feature are the complex preparations: carefully designed combinations of active ingredients for areas such as blood pressure, the thyroid or the liver, based on years of medical experience.
Looking to the future
Today more than 200 employees are working to further develop the publishing house. Our core principles remain the same: traditionally independent, respectful and naturally effective.
