When the summer heat gets under the skin
Homeopathy for heat rash

Finally SUMMER. In the cold season everyone longs for the warm summer months with plenty of sunshine and balmy nights. Especially here in New York the anticipation of summer and sun is great. But once it arrives it can sometimes let us down. We all know the situation and have experienced it at least once: We look at our child and suddenly the question arises “Wait, what is that?” And the shock in summer is all the greater, because: who gets ill in the summer?
I would like to tell you a story here that may one day benefit your family too. Or has it already happened to you?
Like Nellie. Nellie’s baby was only 8 weeks old when the parents‑in‑law announced their first visit to the new family. Nellie was still in the postnatal period, but she still wanted to pop out for a quick shop to get the essentials for the guests.
It was mid‑July and Nellie lives in the southern states, where temperatures in summer quickly climb to 35°C and above. The humidity often feels like 100%.
Well prepared for a hot day, Nellie’s baby was wearing only a very light outfit and even the short car ride to the supermarket was made bearable by the sunshade. While Nellie did her shopping, her baby slept peacefully in the pushchair she had brought.
Back home again it was time to change the nappy. Nellie lifted her little daughter out of the car seat and was about to undress her when she noticed a red rash with fine pimples running from the baby’s nape down the arm to the little fists. The rash looked red and hot and Nellie quickly realised it was bothering the little one a lot.
Like many young mothers, Nellie felt panic when she saw her baby’s reddened and clearly irritated skin and briefly considered taking her to the paediatrician straight away. But Nellie is also a confident young woman and knows that many complaints can be treated gently and safely at home. So she consulted her guide to paediatrics and soon found what she was looking for. Her baby’s rash was heat‑related – a miliaria or heat rash. The increased sweating due to the heat had led to a blockage of the sweat gland ducts in her daughter. This in turn irritates the skin, it becomes red and small pimples form that can be either pale or dark red.
Fortunately Nellie had taken a homeopathy course early in her pregnancy because she had heard it could help during pregnancy and childbirth. She had obtained a homeopathic guide and was able to quickly and easily find a suitable remedy for the baby.
Homeopathic remedies for miliaria/heat rash:
There are several remedies that may be appropriate. Each of these remedies has specific symptoms that need to be distinguished.
Choose a remedy based on the symptoms described here and give it for several days until you know whether the remedy was well chosen. Once symptoms begin to improve, give the remedy every 6 to 12 hours until the complaints have clearly subsided.
1. The first remedy of choice when you are unsure and the symptoms are not clear is
Arsenicum album D6
- Itching and burning with restlessness.
- The complaints persist even when the itching improves.
2. When the pimples look like small insect stings:
Apis mellifica C30
- The skin feels hot, with raised, shiny pimples.
- The patient suddenly swells all over the body.
3. For very intense symptoms:
Belladonna C30
- Stinging rash that appears suddenly and violently.
- The skin is reddened, hot and painful.
- The skin alternates between red and pale.
4. The rash is red and accompanied by raised spots that sting:
Urtica urens C30
- The skin itches and burns.
- Symptoms are made worse by cold water.
- Symptoms ease when the affected area is rubbed. The skin looks like hives.
Nellie chose Belladonna C30 because her baby’s skin was dark red and very, very hot. The little legs, however, were rather pale – a typical Belladonna symptom.
Nellie’s baby was only 2 months old. To make administration easier, Nellie dissolved the small globules in a glass of water and gave her daughter the solution drop by drop into her mouth.
The first drops of Belladonna C30 she gave around midday and again in the evening. The next morning the rash was somewhat paler but not completely gone. Nellie repeated the dose in the morning and once more around midday. By the evening the skin was almost back to normal.
Just in time for the grandparents’ first visit.
Nellie had successfully treated her newborn herself for the first time! She was therefore able to trust her maternal instinct and immediately decided to further deepen her knowledge of homeopathy.
That evening, sitting with her husband and her parents‑in‑law with the baby in her arms, she enjoyed lovingly stroking the delicate skin on her daughter’s arm. It felt velvety, cosy and right and noticeably different from before.
It was a powerful moment. Nellie felt not only the loving care for her firstborn. She was happy and content in the knowledge that she had truly helped her baby.
Without medication. Without side effects. And without high costs.
Most importantly: her little daughter is healed.
