Uraninitum and Uranium nitricum in hereditary spherocytosis

News

At the end of her own consultation a young mother mentioned that her 3‑month‑old daughter had inherited the family disease; a diagnosis of hereditary spherocytosis had been made[1] and she was suffering from anaemia (haemoglobin 8 mg/dl). If the haemoglobin level fell further she would need a blood transfusion. Her mother, her grandfather and his mother also have this type of anaemia. She herself had her spleen removed (splenectomy) at the age of 9.

She asked me whether homeopathy could help. The waiting room was full, it was already quite late, and I did not have enough time for a full case history, so I could only look at the little girl for a short moment. She had a pale, grey face, appeared very self‑assured and reminded me of a very old woman. When she turned to look at me I felt she pierced me with a kind of X‑ray stare. The mother told me that she literally gave off warmth when she had a fever. Well, what was to be done?

Analysis:

She suffers from an inherited disorder of haematopoiesis, looks very old, sizes me up with an X‑ray stare and radiates warmth.

According to Jan Scholten the Uranium series represents advanced age. We find hereditary diseases, genetic aberrations and bone‑marrow disorders. The elements are too heavy and decay with the emission of radiation.
She is very self‑confident (> Stage 6), so I chose a radium salt. Another patient in our practice who suffers from thalassaemia (Mediterranean anaemia) [2] responded well to Uranium nitricum. I could not see a clear indication for a particular salt, so I gave Uraninitum MK [3].

Follow‑up:

At the next blood test two weeks later her haemoglobin had risen to 9.3 mg/dl. The paediatrician was satisfied and decided to wait before doing the transfusion. After six months I saw her again. She had developed well and was already crawling. However, the last MMR vaccination (measles‑mumps‑rubella) two weeks earlier had unsettled her considerably. On the first day after the injection she developed a very high fever up to 41°C; she became irritable and bad‑tempered and her haemoglobin fell back to 8 mg/dl.
At first I gave her the MMR nosode in C200; yet she remained tearful, slept poorly and developed a cold with thick green discharge. Her mother reported that the little one protested strongly when she tried to fasten the safety straps in her car seat. The aversion to being tied in suggested a nitric acid salt to me and I gave Uranium nitricum C200. Two days later she was sleeping well again.
The paediatrician, who had suggested splenectomy, said she should also be vaccinated against meningococci. Again she developed a high fever and behaved aggressively, threw herself on the floor and refused to cuddle. I repeated Uranium nitricum C200. The fever subsided and two weeks later the haemoglobin was almost normal! (11 mg/dl).

Over the past 18 months I have repeated Uranium nitricum C200 three times, mostly for sleep disturbances, and each time it helped within a week.

[1] Hereditary spherocytosis: A genetic disorder of the red blood cell membranes, clinically manifested by anaemia, jaundice (yellowing) and splenomegaly (enlargement of the spleen). In the blood count the erythrocytes are smaller, rounder and more fragile than normal: they are spherical instead of biconcave like normal red blood cells.

[2] Thalassaemia: Thalassaemias are a heterogeneous group of genetically determined blood disorders. They are characterised by absent or reduced production of normal haemoglobin, leading to a microcytic anaemia of varying severity.

[3] Uraninite is a radioactive, uranium‑rich mineral ore with a chemical composition largely consisting of uranium dioxide, but also uranium trioxide and oxides of lead, thorium and rare earths. It is usually referred to as pitchblende (Wikipedia).
