Successful Leptospirosis Prophylaxis with Homeopathy |
|
The journal Homeopathy reported on the successful leptospirosis prophylaxis in Cuba using homeopathic remedies, documented by a large-scale investigation. The study covered the entire Cuban population (approx. 11 million people) and is therefore the largest investigation into the effects of homeopathic medicines carried out to date. The results provide significant evidence of the effectiveness of the homeopathic remedies used in the prevention and treatment of this serious infectious disease. The timely use of homeopathy prevented the outbreak of a pandemic. |

Leptospirosis is an infectious disease caused by leptospires, which can be transmitted from rodents (rats, mice) to humans. People become infected through contact with contaminated water. Despite its worldwide distribution, leptospirosis is primarily a tropical disease that mainly occurs during the rainy season. |
The spread and incidence(1) of leptospirosis are closely monitored by the Cuban health authorities. The frequency of new cases has been shown to be related to the torrential rains of the rainy season and the subsequent flooding. |

At the end of 2007 the authorities only had vaccine available for 15,000 high-risk individuals. The Cuban government responded to the looming threat of a pandemic by deciding to treat the entire population of the at-risk regions prophylactically with homeopathic remedies. All adults and all children over one year of age were treated. A nosode produced from inactivated pathogens was used for the homeopathic prophylaxis and treatment. The Cuban "National Vaccine Institute" provided this nosode. |

| This homeopathic remedy was distributed to the 2.3 million inhabitants of the provinces traditionally most affected. After administration of the remedy the number of infected persons fell within one week from 38 to 4 per 100,000. Thus significantly fewer people were infected than the health authority had expected based on experience in previous years. | |
In the population of the provinces that had not received prophylaxis with homeopathic nosodes (8.8 million people), residents became infected in the same period to the same extent as in previous years, i.e. more than four times as many people fell ill as in the homeopathy provinces. |
|
Meanwhile, in the homeopathy provinces there was also a reduction in incidence of 84% in the following year (2008), and no link between the rainy season and disease frequency could be observed. In the provinces whose populations had not received homeopathic prophylaxis, incidence rose by 22% in 2008. |

Dr Sara Eames (President of the Faculty of Homeopathy) calls for further investigations into the use of homeopathic infection prophylaxis and pandemic prevention in order to stop the spread of epidemics, "the curse of humanity especially in developing countries": "Anything that can contain the spread of deadly infectious diseases, that is quickly available, safe and inexpensive, must be taken seriously and investigated." Dr Peter Fisher (editor of the journal "Homeopathy"), also argues for further research into the use of homeopathy in infection prophylaxis and pandemic prevention, not least because homeopathy offers a low-cost prophylaxis – a considerable factor given the financial situation of developing countries. He predicts that the results of this extensive study, if confirmed, will have a wide impact. |
