Homeopathy for heatstroke and collapse

News

by Joette Calabrese

Heat can be deadly. India is currently experiencing an exceptional heatwave that has already claimed the lives of more than 2,000 people. While all of India eagerly awaits the monsoon, temperatures are climbing to 47°C, and the situation in the major cities was extremely tense at the beginning of June.

I recently spoke with an emergency physician here in the US who this summer has to treat up to five patients per shift for heat-related exhaustion symptoms. These patients are not only middle-aged men who overexerted themselves in a half marathon in high temperatures, but also young teenagers who spend too much time on the beach and therefore in the sun.

If you do not drink enough during summer heat, the consequences can be serious. It makes no difference whether you are young or old, healthy or frail. Drinking is important!

If exhaustion or other symptoms do occur, help can be given quickly and gently. You can rely on homeopathy in any situation, whether you are in an extreme situation or have simply not drunk enough.

Today I will write about two heat-related conditions that can be treated effectively with the indicated homeopathic remedies. Of course, you must also ensure that you drink sufficiently alongside the homeopathic pellets to restore fluid loss!

Heat-related exhaustion

Our body reacts to extreme fluid loss with acute exhaustion symptoms. In hot weather we sweat a lot; the body loses water and electrolytes that must be replaced. If this does not happen, exhaustion occurs. In this situation Veratrum album C30 is the indicated remedy. Think of this remedy whenever you suspect heat-related exhaustion.

This remedy is always used when the patient is very weak or has even collapsed. Dizziness and fainting belong to the symptom picture. Paradoxically, patients usually complain of a feeling of cold, especially the hands, feet and face feel cold. In some cases the feeling of cold spreads over the whole body. Under certain circumstances the affected persons may also break out into a cold sweat, complain of nausea and look pale in the face.

Also watch for a rapid pulse and a stiffness that runs through the whole body.

As a rule of thumb, the remedy is indicated when a large proportion of the symptoms listed above are present. Weakness in particular is pronounced and provides an important clue for Veratrum album 30.

In more severe attacks that do not improve quickly, a doctor should definitely be consulted.

Second in line for the treatment of heat-related exhaustion is Cuprum metallicum C30. This remedy is typically used for cramps and muscle twitching, which can be so severe that a certain tendency to convulsions may be apparent. Symptoms leading us to this remedy include drowsiness, dizziness, a rapid pulse and cold sweat. The characteristic feature of Cuprum metallicum, however, is muscle cramps, twitching and, in severe cases, convulsions. The remedy is indicated when these symptoms occur.

Heatstroke
With heatstroke the body can no longer regulate its own temperature because it has been exposed to intense heat for too long. The most important signs of heatstroke are fever, unconsciousness or delirium.

The two most important remedies for treatment are Glonoinum 30 and Belladonna 30. In both cases the affected person has a flushed face, throbbing headache and fever.

Let me note here that the two remedies can be distinguished by a small detail. The patient who needs Glonoinum cannot bend the head backwards and often reacts to cold applications with muscle twitching or jerking. Glonoinum patients also have a strong desire to be outdoors and in the fresh air.

By contrast, Belladonna patients find tilting the head back pleasant and feel better when they can sit perfectly still.

Regardless of which remedy you choose, the dosage is the same: give the remedy initially every 10 to 20 minutes and then at wider intervals as the patient progressively improves. During treatment the patient should sip lightly salted water to replace fluid loss.

Basically it is quite simple. Keep this guide in your homeopathic medicine cabinet so that you can act competently in an emergency.
