It was called "the Great White Plague" (a term also used for pulmonary tuberculosis before the antibiotic era). It is hard to imagine the devastating scale of the 1918–19 influenza epidemic. People who survived that epidemic reported that someone who was completely healthy in the morning could be dead by the evening. D. H. A. Roberts was then the ship's doctor on a troop transport. Another ship came alongside to request surplus coffins — such was the mortality. On his return to port the captain asked Roberts, "Did you need all your coffins?" to which Roberts, who had treated his ship homeopathically, replied, "Yes, but we did not lose a single man!" |

The following text is an excerpt from an article titled "Homeopathy in Influenza" by Dr W. A. Dewey, which appeared in 1920 in the journal of the American Institute of Homeopathy. Dean W. A. Pearson of Philadelphia collected 26,795 influenza cases treated by homeopathic physicians; the mortality rate was 1.05%, whereas the average mortality with conventional medical treatment at that time was 30%. Thirty physicians from Connecticut responded to my request for data. They reported 6,602 cases with 55 deaths; that is less than 1%.

- In a factory with 8,000 workers we had only one death. Here patients were not pumped full of drugs and thereby, so to speak, "treated to death." Gelsemium was practically the only remedy used. - I treated 1,000 influenza cases. I have records to document my work. I had no patient losses. This is entirely due to homeopathy! - T. A. McCann, Maryland, Dayton, Ohio. - A doctor at a Pittsburgh clinic asked a nurse if she knew anything better than what he prescribed, because he was losing many cases. "Yes, doctor, stop using aspirin, go to a homeopathic pharmacy and get homeopathic remedies." The doctor replied, "But that is homeopathy!" - There is a drug that directly or indirectly causes more deaths than influenza itself. You all know this drug. It is called salicylic acid. The story of aspirin is well known. Yet it is little understood today what consequences the sedative effect of salicylic acid can have. It harms in two ways. Indirectly, by being taken so long that exhaustion and weakness occur and the patient develops pneumonia. – Dr Frank L. Newton, Somerville, Massachusetts - Aspirin and other hydrocarbons are considered the cause of many unnecessary deaths. Ubiquitous aspirin is the most harmful drug of all. Its rapid effect on pain falsely suggests an improvement, a deceptive success. In many cases aspirin weakened the heart, reduced vitality, increased mortality in cases that initially appeared uncomplicated and slowed recovery. In all cases it masked symptoms and made the choice of the appropriate remedy more difficult. Apparently aspirin in no way contributes to curing diseases and should therefore be banned. – Dr Guy Beckly Stearns, New York - I successfully treated 350 cases and lost only one patient, who came to me with an advanced pneumonia after having taken a hundred aspirin in twenty-four hours. - Dr Cora Smith King, District of Washington - I received a large pack of aspirin with 1,000 tablets, 994 too many. I prescribed only about half a dozen. I could do nothing with it. My remedies were limited. I gave almost exclusively Gelsemium and Bryonia. I hardly ever lost a case when I was the first to see the patient, unless the patient had already been sent to a pharmacy and had bought aspirin; then I could expect a case of pneumonia. – Dr J. P. Reading the epidemic reports, it seems to me that most deaths were caused by infectious pneumonia, which was particularly devastating among those whose vital forces had been weakened by analgesics — mostly aspirin. The physician who introduced me to homeopathy, Dr Raymond Seidel, said he decided to work as a homeopathic doctor during an influenza epidemic when, as a youth of ten, he worked as a delivery boy for a homeopath in New Jersey. He said, "I observed that the people who took aspirin died; about half the alcoholics died, and those who took homeopathic remedies survived."

Homeopathy is unbeatable in the treatment of viral diseases including influenza. There is a long history of successful treatment of severe acute infections, especially influenza, using homeopathy. Homeopathic medicine proved extremely effective during the 1918 influenza epidemic and will stand the test in any future influenza pandemic — just as it does each winter in treating the current influenza cases of the year. |

The 1918 Spanish influenza pandemic was a plague even worse than the Bubonic Plague of 1347 and wiped out a third of the European population. Worldwide the Spanish flu killed about 40 million people. In some primitive cultures the mortality reached 100 percent.
