Do emotions run particularly high at your home at Christmas? For example, the much‑pressed mum trying to cope with the Christmas stress alone and almost breaking down under the pressure to make the celebrations perfect. Or the child who becomes ill and clingy with excitement and is hard to soothe. Then there are, of course, the many relatives who make the house burst at the seams with activity. And some people put on a brave face even though they feel lonely and sad inside.
The good news is that many of these emotional surges can be quickly brought back into balance with homeopathy, so you can find your centre again and truly enjoy the holidays.
1. The ‘over‑excited’ child.jpg)
If your child (or you!) is so excited that they cannot sleep for sheer anticipation of Father Christmas or the Christ Child, or startle awake at the slightest noise, you should think of the homeopathic remedy Coffea.
The remedy is made from the coffee bean. You can easily tell if homeopathic Coffea fits your child’s behaviour, because they will behave as if they had drunk too much coffee. The child is ‘wired’ and hardly able to calm down.
Adults who cannot sleep because of good news, excitement or euphoric feelings also respond well to this remedy.
2. Overwhelmed by stress
We all feel the pressure that comes with the hustle and bustle of Christmas to a greater or lesser extent. But if you feel very stressed, drained and overwhelmed by this hectic pace, you might consider the homeopathic remedy Sepia.
In the Sepia state one can feel quite down and depressed and would prefer to run away. There is a longing for solitude and peace. With extreme exhaustion irritability sets in; the person becomes snappish and tearful. In the worst case they become numb and meet the family with indifference, especially their own children. Physically, menstrual problems may occur and the body feels generally heavy and sluggish.
3. Overindulgence and irritability
The homeopathic remedy Nux vomica is a lifesaver if you have eaten too much and had too much to drink over the festive days. The person complains of headaches, digestive problems, nausea and constipation. Sleep is difficult; at three in the morning you are wide awake and cannot get back to sleep. Usually the longed‑for sleep only comes in the early hours of the morning, just before you have to get up and start the day. Accordingly, the mood is irritable and grumpy.
4. The clingy child
Your child is gentle, mild‑mannered and loving while they are well, but becomes fussy, difficult and clings to mum as soon as they feel unwell. Does that sound familiar? Then you should definitely think of the homeopathic Pulsatilla. With so much excitement, stimulus, activity and external influence a child can easily pick up a cough or a cold. This is accompanied by thick, yellow‑green mucus. The child is worse in a warm room but perks up in the fresh air. Pulsatilla children like to be comforted and held; very small children spend a lot of time in someone’s arms and like to be carried around. It is also a useful remedy for nausea and vomiting after eating too many rich foods.
5. The sad and disappointed child
If your child is upset because Father Christmas or the Christ Child did not bring the presents they so wished for, you should think of the homeopathic remedy Ignatia. This also applies if a family member or parent is absent and greatly missed. This remedy is often given to cope with grief and disappointment. The person can be broken by even a small thing; the reaction is often dramatic with rapid mood swings. One moment they laugh with joy, only to be in tears a short while later. These people often sigh deeply—unconsciously—and are usually very sensitive to reproach.
These are just a few homeopathic remedies that can help you through the Christmas season. Of course, their use is not limited to this time of year. Bring homeopathic help into your home; it’s worth it.
