In 2011 Jan is brought for an initial consultation because of asthmatic bronchitis, concentration problems at school and sleep problems. He is a quiet, gentle ten-year-old boy. His mother reports that he has had concentration problems since year 3 – he is now in year 7. “Daydreaming. He insists that he pays attention in class.” He is often scolded for this, which he finds unfair.
He has asthmatic bronchitis and uses an inhaler. He coughs a lot and wheezes when playing with friends who have cats.
At night he wakes twice, often with nightmares: he dreams that he is murdered or chased by a giant spider. He needs a night light because he cannot bear the dark. Horror films frighten him.
His mother became pregnant with him after several miscarriages. During the pregnancy she repeatedly lost blood. Labour was very difficult and was induced with Oxytocin. He was born with the umbilical cord around his neck: the attending doctor was still in training and panicked, and the midwife took over.
Jan’s Apgar score was 9/10. He was bottle-fed because his mother was too exhausted to breastfeed him. Jan developed asthmatic bronchitis at two months. He also frequently had eczema and middle ear infections. As a small child he slept in the knee-elbow position (3). At school he finds everything boring except PE and gymnastics.
Analysis
One of the most striking aspects of this case is Jan’s knee-elbow sleeping position as a small child, a guiding symptom for Medorrhinum.
Initial prescription: Medorrhinum 200K, 2 globules every two weeks
Follow-up after 8 weeks: cough markedly improved, but sleep and concentration disorders unchanged.
Analysis
His difficult start in life draws my attention: labour induced with Oxytocin, umbilical cord around the neck, panic, and the mother too exhausted to breastfeed.
Prescription: Oxytocinum 200K, 2 globules every 2 weeks
Eight weeks after the first dose of Oxytocinum Jan shows improvement on all levels: his sleep problems have abated and he no longer has nightmares. His ability to concentrate at school has improved, and his asthmatic bronchitis has not recurred.
