Cold Turkey

[Text in the image: This Thanksgiving I am grateful for my husband (who is still alive), my family and my friends, for my students and my clients, for the privilege of being able to share the good news of homoeopathy; above all I am grateful that 28 years ago I discovered this method of healing for myself.]

Thanksgiving evokes happy memories of turkey, stuffing, cranberries and pie. But I remember a particular turkey incident a few years ago that really shook me up at the time. Fortunately homoeopathy, as so often, came to the rescue that day.
I had foolishly left two days' worth of turkey leftovers on the kitchen worktop. (I don't normally do that! But I wanted to dispose of the leftovers separate from the usual rubbish and simply hadn't got around to it.)

And to my horror my husband, Perry, ate them. "Delicious!" he said after polishing off the whole bowl.Digestive Organs - The Path to the Centre

"You ate that ?!" I didn't want to alarm him, but I was sure it hadn't been a good idea.

Cold Turkey with serious consequences

So it was no surprise when within about half a day he developed a severe case of food poisoning. Symptoms of food poisoning usually begin within a few hours of eating spoiled food. These include nausea, vomiting, watery diarrhoea, fever, abdominal pain and cramps. In severe food poisoning there can be extreme pain, dehydration, profound weakness, dizziness or faintness, blurred vision, muscle weakness and tingling in the arms.

Perry's food poisoning was so severe that I found him lying flat on the floor. I couldn't tell what he was feeling because he didn't want (or couldn't) move or speak to me. I wasn't even sure whether he was conscious. Later he told me he thought he was losing consciousness repeatedly because of the pain.

Arsenicum album for food poisoning

Fearing I might have killed my husband, I threw a few blankets over him and fetched my homoeopathy kit. Then I quickly gave him a dose of Arsenicum album 30. Arsenicum is the principal remedy for food poisoning, especially from spoiled meat. When the symptoms include profuse diarrhoea, burning in the gut, a feeling of cold all over, extreme exhaustion, restlessness and anxiety, Arsenicum is the remedy of choice. He did not have all of these symptoms, but spoiled meat and collapse were enough information for me.

Handbook of Homeopathic Materia MedicaI gave him Arsenicum album 30 every fifteen minutes (I could have given a 200 as well, but I was still fairly new to homoeopathy at the time and lacked the confidence). More information on dosing and potency selection can be found here https://www.narayana-verlag.de/spektrum-homoeopathie/d-oder-c-potenz-das-ist-hier-die-frage. I continued this until he showed more response, and finally got up from the floor and went to bed. He continued to take Arsenicum roughly hourly until the pain, weakness and his level of consciousness improved. I administered it throughout the night. He still had some vomiting and diarrhoea afterwards, but at least he was not unconscious.

The next day he was somewhat recovered, though still very weak. That day I continued with Arsenicum and supplemented it with a dose of Calc phos D6 combined with Ferr phos D6 every six hours. That was intended to speed up recovery.

Without homoeopathy Perry would, at best, have spent that week in hospital instead of enjoying time with his family.

Homoeopathy – a lesson for life

In retrospect there are a number of things I could have done differently. I should have immediately assumed a problem might develop after he ate the leftovers and given him Arsenicum right away—to nip it in the bud. After all, it is the best remedy for the severe consequences of spoiled meat.

And I should also have thought about dehydration and the appropriate Schuessler cell salts Natrium muriaticum 6 and Kalium phosphoricum 6. They could have been given every three hours to counteract that development.

So keep your family close, keep the turkey fresh (and in the fridge where it belongs), and keep your home medicine kit well stocked. May this holiday bring you much blessing and peace! Homoeopathy helps – spread the word!

Warmly,

Yours,
