I would like to emphasise that in my therapeutic work I always have in mind the method of Rudolph Flury from Bern, who works according to the elements theory and the types doctrine. Meanwhile we also have Jan Scholten’s work from the last 20 years, in which he has classified all minerals including their psychological dimensions. |

DP: “What brings you to me?” |
Pt: “I underwent chemotherapy in Innsbruck after I was diagnosed with hairy cell leukaemia. After the chemotherapy my leucocytes did not recover for a long time. When they finally began to rise again I was discharged home. I was so exhausted that I could barely walk 100 steps; I had no energy left. |
| The leucocytes finally rose to over 3,000, then to 5,000, but I had absolutely no energy and my other blood values were not good. I was told the prognosis was poor and I would need a second chemotherapy. | |
It all began with a severe flu. My blood was tested and I had only 1,500 leucocytes. At the end of March 2000 I was admitted to hospital. After discharge I returned to my workplace. So I already had low leucocyte levels before this diagnosis. I was always tired and perspired easily. For a year I was under medical observation because of the low leucocyte count. Then I was admitted to the clinic as an emergency with severe pain and total physical collapse; I couldn’t even stand. For three days I hovered between life and death; a diagnosis of hairy cell leukaemia was made. When I came home from hospital I was tired and burnt out. Because of the severe bone marrow pains I needed morphine. I had small tumours under the skin, leuko-cystic infiltrations. So I also needed morphine patches on the skin.” |

| In the consultation we went through her life history, especially her childhood. We explored her character and addressed her psychological problems. If we remain open and calm, the really important things come up spontaneously and then we can observe many things in the patient. Childhood is particularly important, because in that phase of life all external things have a great influence on us. Pt: “I had a wonderful family; I had a good relationship with my father, but my mother was very difficult. I always felt caught between my parents. My mother could hardly bear that I had such a good relationship with my father; so I withdrew from both to avoid the conflict. My mother was strict, my father loving, tender and caring, I felt more connected to him. It was unbearable to me that my mother could not accept the way I was connected to my father. During puberty my withdrawal was very painful for my father. I no longer told him as much as I used to, and I was no longer the affectionate daughter I had been before. In some matters I disagreed with him and so we had a lot of conflicts. I suffered from these conflicts. To prove my independence I chose a profession that did not exactly please my parents: I taught religion. I received no recognition from them for my profession.” |
| DP: “Is it so important what others think?” | |
| Pt: “It probably shouldn’t be, but it is!” | |
| We have many clues: she is a soft person, a little overweight, insecure, sensitive to others’ thoughts and sensitive to criticism. She likes soft-boiled eggs and sweats at the nape of the neck. We can at least consider Calcium carbonicum as a main remedy. Her family conflict seems rather mild: the mother is strict, the father loving and she wanted both parents – children always want that. There is a loyalty conflict and she withdraws; some children react aggressively, others withdraw. This withdrawal, which probably began with the mother, runs through her whole life; it is really a burden on her shoulders. She withdrew from both parents and adopted other values that suited her better. We see a lot of calcium symptoms here, but not necessarily Calcium carbonicum. | |
In this case Jan Scholten’s method is especially valuable. Often I recognise part of the remedy already while the patient is still sitting in the waiting room; the other part must be “dug out”. When we dive into the world of minerals, as with the Schuessler salts for example, we see that they do not act very deeply because they are given in low potencies. With Jan’s method we have access to over 1000 mineral remedies and can choose those that act most deeply. |

![]() Salt pillar |
We have here a calcium woman, but which calcium does she need? Her main problem is her mother. The third stage has to do with the “relationship series”, it begins with sodium and ends with chlorine. The greatest remedy of sorrow that we know is sodium chloride; the symbol is Lot’s wife, who looked back and turned into a salt pillar. In the middle of this series stands Silicea with the theme family. |
| In this case it is stage 17; one clings to everything connected with “rise and fall”, one cannot give up, but one must let go, it is the end. The symbol for a relationship that lasts for a certain time and must then be let go is motherhood. The mother has a very intense relationship with the child. In the oral phase the child must always be with the mother, the mother cannot distance herself far from it. Then the child begins to walk and becomes increasingly independent. The symbol for this kind of relationship, which is necessary for a certain time and then must be let go, is Chlorum. She therefore needs Calcium muriaticum, which I gave her in C30. | |
| DP: “The second problem is your strict mother and the theme of separation. You say you have difficulty finding the right distance with friends, family and students.” | |
Pt: “Yes, I am very reliable towards everyone, but I pay a high price for it. I care too much about others. If my students have family problems, it stays with me until late at night. I cannot forget what the students tell me. As a child I had feelings of guilt, I always feared hurting my mother because of the close relationship with my father. All my life I have had difficulty making clear cuts in relationships. I help a lot in church. I cannot set boundaries or distance myself from something. The leukopenia developed one and a half years after the breakdown of an important relationship.” |
DP: “What improved first after giving the remedy?” |
| Pt: “Emotionally I felt better immediately. The next day I phoned you to tell you that my panic attacks had gone. They had stopped overnight!” | |
DP: Actually I had given the remedy because of the bone pains...! The first thing that changes is the energy on the psychological level, on the psychic plane. Suddenly energy returns to the system. Kent said the strength comes back when everything is back in balance. Then the pains improve and physical strength increases. That is what happened here: she became stronger and had less pain. |
| DP: “In the last three weeks you haven’t needed morphine any more, is that right?” | |
| Pt: “Yes, I am well. At the same time my leucocytes rose to 10,000.” | |
When everything in the “inner centre” is in order, the body follows; we must penetrate to depth to correct the information. It is like going behind the scenes of a theatre and making important changes with the director, rather than with the actors. |
| Pt: “Then I had those tumours that had developed during the chemotherapy, their diameter was about 2.5 cm. No one knew what they were; the surgeons wanted to operate; they thought the nodes would attract the leucocytes. But in the end they did not dare to proceed and said that if there were further infections I would hardly survive the operation.” | |
| See how conventional medicine thinks? It does not think holistically but in parts: here is a tumour, there are the bones, here is an allergy and there are infections from dead leucocytes. However, the disease lies much deeper, it lies in the psychological sphere. The only way to reach it is with potentised medicines; even C12 or C30 are in a realm beyond atoms. In this realm completely different laws apply; time and space are one. It revolves around a single theme, and therefore we can cover everything here with a single remedy, so to speak tackle the evil at the root. That is why Jan’s system is so valuable to us. Hahnemann described that patients have certain mental and emotional symptoms, and that remedies can produce mental and emotional symptoms. Jan concentrates on the mental-emotional state to determine the correct remedy. |
Pt: “After taking the remedy the tumours shrank completely, now they are gone. I only have some muscle pain in my legs. The conventional doctors could do nothing more for me, they only discuss my case. Earlier I also had pain in my legs when I was discharged from hospital, but then it was bone marrow pain.” |
What is now happening is like rewinding a video; the old symptoms return: calcium symptoms, tiredness in the legs, etc. In the hospital they puzzled over what to do with this lady who no longer wanted chemotherapy. I told her that in view of such a good convalescence it would be better for her to stay away from further chemotherapy. (One cannot generalise here and apply this situation to everyone!) She consulted her GP, who personally drove her to Innsbruck for the biopsy, and it turned out that no more chemotherapy was required. The pain had receded, there were no hairy cells left in her blood, the tumours had disappeared and the blood values were normal. |
| DP: “You had a big problem, but now you are on a good path!” | |
| Pt: “Yes, I have a good prognosis!” | |
| A year later she suffered from heart problems, hypertension, cardiac arrhythmias, and joint pains that moved from top to bottom. All these symptoms fit the picture of Kalmia. Kalmia belongs to the Ericaceae family. We know little about these remedy pictures, but they have similarities with calcium: they have a strong sense of duty, do not like to stand in the front row, care a lot for others and put themselves last. | |
| After addressing a very deep level of disease with a mineral remedy, we now come to a plant remedy. It happens quite often that one moves from the mineral level to a plant remedy. I tried Calcium muriaticum for her blood pressure, but there was absolutely no reaction; it was as if that layer had completely disappeared. I tried Aurum muriaticum experimentally for the precordial pain radiating into the back, but there was no real resonance. However she responded very well to Kalmia. |
