Breast pain: when even a hug is too much

Breast pain (mastalgia): When even a hug is too much

If I ask you, woman to woman, whether you have ever withdrawn from a warm, loving hug simply because you could not bear it because of your sore breasts — what would you answer? Does it alarm you when a conventional doctor tells you that you have mastalgia?

Medical terms like this unsettle most of us, which is understandable. It is simply another word for breast pain – mastos is Greek for breast and -algia means pain. And who among us has never had sore, sensitive or painful breasts?

Mastalgia can have many causes: puberty when the breasts are developing, PMS, pregnancy, breastfeeding, hormonal changes during the menopause, or injuries.

I want to say straight away that severe or unusual breast pain should always be investigated diagnostically. Under no circumstances should important symptoms be neglected.

Nevertheless, I would encourage you to turn the usual procedure on its head and not consult a doctor at the first sign of breast discomfort. Often it is worth considering the cost-saving yet effective homeopathic approach. A diagnosis can also be helpful and provide important clues for the correct remedy.

If the breast is very tender to the touch, perhaps during the period, in pregnancy or while breastfeeding, Bryonia C30, taken twice daily, is the emergency remedy of choice. An emergency remedy is only taken until the pain is no longer present, after which it is discontinued.

So is it the same as the ibuprofen you regularly take every month for the pain? NO! Homeopathy does not simply mask symptoms; it goes deeper and treats the underlying cause. Repertorium-fuer-den-homoeopathischen-Praktiker-Henri-Voisin.11526.jpgThe complaints are treated effectively in the long term, as with Jean R., who was able to get rid of her breast pain for good.

Jean's period always and without fail announced itself each month with breast pain. That was the trigger she ignored in most months. (If the breasts are only slightly tender to the touch, they do not need treatment.) Over the years the pain, however, became worse and regularly put her out of action. Jean then slept poorly and could hardly carry out her normal work.

Jean took Bryonia C30 and within a few days only a hint of breast pain remained. At her next period she took Bryonia again and the pain reduced even further. The month after that the pain was gone. For good. Bryonia had tackled the problem at the root and Jean no longer had to endure breast pain.

That is the beauty of homeopathy.

But suppose the breast aches after an injury – for example in a car accident when the breast is compressed by the seatbelt. (This happens to women much more often than we suppose.) In this situation I would take Bellis perennis C200 every 3–12 hours, depending on how severe the pain is.

If, however, the pain stems from an infection, then it is very likely mastitis (again: mastos means breast and -itis means inflammation. Medical terms need not be intimidating. Sometimes it is quite simple.) I am often asked how one knows whether the pain is due to an inflammation. That is relatively easy to answer: if the breast is hot, red and swollen or if it occurs together with fever and chills, it is usually an infection. Mastitis also often appears during breastfeeding, which can be another good clue. In any case, mastitis is a topic in its own right and is discussed elsewhere.

We women do not have to be brave, grit our teeth and endure the pain. We can take responsibility for our health and restore our balance with the help of homeopathy. So that we can happily and pain-free throw ourselves back into everyday life and care for our families.
