THE PLACENTA: AN ASTONISHING ORGAN

The placenta is a self-developing tissue on the wall of the uterus that belongs to the embryonal organism, which forms it. The placenta

is interwoven with blood vessels from both mother and embryo. The embryo (later the foetus) is directly in contact with the mother’s

blood circulation, receiving nutrients and oxygen, and excreting waste products. After birth the placenta is expelled together with

the amniotic membrane as the afterbirth. Unlike all other human organs, which assume their function only after a sufficient period

of development and maturity, the placenta has to control its own growth, while remaining fully functioning. In every stage of the

pregnancy it must ensure that the special needs of the child are met. Along with nourishing the child, the placenta also performs

hormonal tasks. It remains to be properly researched how the placenta regulates the mother’s immune system so that she is protected

from infections while at the same time preventing ejection of the placenta and the child as foreign tissue.
