Gertrud Pysall has decoded the language of horses and here she presents Motiva-Training®, which she herself has developed. In contrast to conventional training methods for horses, here the human learns the “vocabulary”, gestures and social rules of horses to use them for more effective communication with these animals. Horses already know their own language and do not need to learn it: they even expect humans to master their language since humans accompany the domesticated horse right through its life. It is a fallacy to equate wild horses with horses that have been domesticated by humans. The domesticated horse has quite different expectations of people: if we can fulfil these expectations, we will be enthusiastically accepted by the horse as an equal communication partner.
In this presentation Gertrud Pysall shows her original discoveries, her initial observations and field trials. Using videos, she demonstrates aspects of the horse‘s vocabulary, gestures, and the communication process between horse and human.
Gertrud Pysall uses solely gestures from the language of horses. Many current teachings on “horse communication” consist primarily of human or other nonequine gestures – these have little or nothing to do with the language of horses.
In her talk, Gertrud Pysall highlights the main aspects of Motiva training® and conveys the basic ideas that have emerged from her comprehensive research. She offers the listener a fresh, hitherto unknown way of thinking, directed at the horse itself rather than people‘s conception of horses. She breaks the mould by showing common misconceptions in the relationship between humans and horses, so paving the way for a unique method of dealing with horses, found nowhere else in the world.
The following elements of vocabulary are described in detail (with video clips):
• Lateral movement
• Defecating / marking (cotton bundle)
• Display behaviour (ignoring)
