Seeing well and looking good thanks to mother nature
Beta-carotene (also called provitamin A) is the precursor for the essential vitamin A (retinol) – the conversion naturally takes place in our bodies. Vitamin A* is important for our vision, strong body defences and an attractive and healthy skin. A daily dose of beta-carotene drops from Unimedica covers the recommended adult daily requirement for vitamin A to the level of 264 %.
Beta-carotene comes in numerous foods such as the similarly named carrot but cannot always be effectively utilised. Its bioavailability rises with the processing of foods, such as cooking or juicing. However this often results in the destruction of other valuable nutrients.
So the Beta-Carotene drops from Unimedica use provitamin A extracted from the halophile (“salt-loving”) alga Dunaliella salina, since the natural carotinoid complex it contains can be very easily utilised by the human body. Unlike isolated beta-carotene with its risk of overdosage, this pure plant extract from Dunaliella salina algae contains provitamin A in its natural form.
Since vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin, beta-carotene from Dunaliella salina algae is dissolved in high-quality MCT oil, which improves the bioavailability.
What is beta-carotene?
Beta-carotene is a carotinoid secondary plant substance and is an orange-red plant pigment. It is also called provitamin A since it is converted to vitamin A in the body (retinol formation).
In which foods is beta-carotene found?
Beta-carotene is found in many types of fruit and vegetable. Sweet potato, carrot, curly kale and apricots contain a relatively large amount of beta-carotene. It is also found in red pepper, spinach and mango.
But beta-carotene can also be extracted from the alga Dunaliella salina. This is a green alga that lives in highly saline (salty) waters. It has the ability to produce large amounts of beta-carotene in conditions of dryness or bright light – 5 to 14 % of its own dry weight. This ensures its survival in extreme environmental conditions. The beta-carotene drops from Unimedica also use provitamin A extracted from this single-celled saline alga.
Why can it make sense to take additional beta-carotene?
Vitamin A is an essential vitamin with a major effect on key body functions. The body can make it from beta-carotene (provitamin A). Certain diseases and medicines can restrict the uptake of fat-soluble vitamins such as vitamin A (retinol). Intensive sunbathing and smoking also increase the requirement for beta-carotene since they accelerate the decomposition of vitamin A.
